I think I'm going to take the Starship Troopers approach myself. Smaller vessels named for individuals, middle named for generals or national leaders, and larger for famous battles (ie Waterloo, Agincourt, Saratoga...) :)

Actually that leads me to a question. Will I be able to create templates, which I can then modify? That'd make it easier for those who want to make ships that are individually named.

already been answered...random tech makes your templates useless very quickly. Any design can be called up and then modified and renamed though.

Ah, reminds me of some of the ship names in Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. "Frank Exchange Of Views" is an inspired name for a warship :)

I'm gonna call my dreadnought "GAN".

*looks around, hoping anyone will recognise the name*

I'm gonna be naming a small, low-tech, but powerful Destroyer class "Victory" class. My goal is to have a class that's rough and dependable; balanced, but effective. I also plan on naming a mid-high range Cruiser class a "Warlock" class vessel. Only the second is a reference to something, though I'd be interested to know what anyone thinks I might've been referencing in the first. Could add to my potential reading list.

B5 has Warlocks, doesn't it? As for Victory, I was immediately reminded of the Liberty ships of WWII (and Orwell's "victory gin").

In many cases, it IS the rugged common equipment that's most seen and most remembered. The T-34 was a pretty humble tank compared to, say, the KV-1. The Tiger was not as heavy as the Maus. V&W destroyers weren't the HMS Hood, and U-boats weren't the Bismarck.

At some point in a game against my buddy Avi I'm going to have to name three classes of ships (probably one of each size catagory) the "Biggity Bam" "Biggity Bizzam" and finally "Ring of Quads" after a really silly Maya3d (or XSI, one or the other) explanation I heard him give someone. I can't remember anything beyond him saying "Biggity Bizzam" in relation to generating a ring of quads, and it being amusing as hell. I wonder if he remembers...

However, for more serious games against people, I'm probably going to figure some useful serial numbering system with space for changes based on weapons loadout and then some somewhat related and slightly rediculous name. Though at some point I'm going to need a heavy-armed destroyer class called the Leviathan, and a class with identical sections and a much lighter weapons loadout called the Fenris.

Military themes for Human. Navy (capital ships)/Coast Guard (smaller ships, patrols, explorers) vessels, submarines/u-boats (special forces).
With the Liir I'll name some after oceans and other aquatic themes.

Warlock class Destroyer (keep in mind that their destroyers are more or less battlecruiser class, mixed with the fighter complement of a a medium carrier; meanwhile, they have a far older design, the "Hyperion" class cruiser, that's much smaller than the newer "Omega" class destroyer...). See this link for data on the Warlock project from the Babylon 5 universe.

I believe that Ivanova's first post-B5 assignment was to take one of these prototypes on a shakedown cruise.

Of course, there are other meanings.
