Mmm, I may have to add Omega to the list...

Speaking about Ivanova, one of my posts in "The Good, The Bad and the Fuzzy" is an Ivanova quote.

Muchos gracias for the link dude, it's pretty interesting.

EDIT: Interesting, but the grammar is atrocious. Dear hod, it's bad.

Been reading the bits that pop up from screenshots and AARs and it got me thinking again about ship names. So I was wondering if any of the newer folks have some Themes they are considering?

To be honest I am now strongly thinking of a Gummi Bear theme. I even have the theme song memorized.

This came about due to a conversation about 80's cartoons my friends miss Heheheh

Still considering Voltron and Robotek, but those are kind of expected.

I know that I'm going to name my Jammer ships stuff like Fog of war or Sand in your face (or Mecron's name from one of his screenshots Stick in the Eye)

I'm gonna name my recon ships Mercury or Quicksilver

My stealth fleet (the ones with cloak) will have very similar names that I might change from time to time during the game (thank you pencil and paper for letting me have the master list) I'm thinking Wraith Mk. IIa Wraith Mk.IIb

I'm gonna save Daedalus until I can build mobile shipyards (expecting that to happen with the mysterious larger than Dread class that has been hinted to with the whispers of rumors of SOTS II)

I plan on making a new ship class for each individual Dread. I would pick one of the common big ships names for them depending on the Dread's layout and role in the fleet. Dread designed to protect my homeworld; lets name it Aegis

I like the hand weapon types, but I think I will go with soldier types instead.
Swordsmen, Pikemen, knights, praetorians whatever

Depends on what I have in mind for the empire I play. If I go for the megalomaniac imperialist conquerors, I'd take arrogant, posh names like "Defender of the Empire" for slow, heavily armed/armoured DNs that protect my space, "Eyes of Glory" for fast recon/scout ships, and "Eyes of Liquid Rage" for my middle-class, mainstay fleet cruisers.

If I wanna be a peaceful, diplomatic race, I'd name my ships things like "Safe Haven" for tankers, "Guardian" for defense DNs, "Lancet" for small strike DDs, "Piece Docent" for my attack DNs.

Or if I go casual without any powerful paradigms in mind, I'll go with my usual naming scheme; tankers, transports etc. will be named after English cities, Darkstar would be my most powerful anti-DD PD Command Dreadnought, etc.

I plan on designing and naming each of my Dreads indivdually. I'm going to name them all after clonies that my opponets have bombarded or destroyed. If no enemies have attacked my colonies, leaving me short on names, and I can build dreads, I obviously don't need dreads.

heh nice idea Kaorti.

For my ideal class names, one would have to be Texas for a dreadnought. It would be two things: armor and mass drivers. Everything else is a distant third. I'm not from Texas, but to me, "Texas-class Battleship" just rolls off the tongue.

Otherwise, I mainly use ancient cultures / mythology as my inspiration. Oracle, Seer, Janus for scouts, Aegis, Phalanx, Scutum for PD, Janissary, Centurion, Shogun for heavy combat ships. Names of the various gods are a good source as well. Loki sounds like a fun ECM or Wild Weasel, sowing havoc as much as possible!

We are, however, neglecting a crucial set of ship names from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: the Galactic Fleet Battleships GSS Daring, GSS Audacity, and GSS Suicidal Insanity.

Way to revive a thread that had been dead for 4 months ;)
There is a reason that it is not worth using the search funtion on this forum. It's not like there is a limited # of threads alowed.

And how was that on topic, Telvin? If there's interest, why is reviving an old thread bad? We have a ton of threads asking about the demo, why should we also have a tone abot every other topic we might want to talk about?

Anyway... To topic: I will probably do the god thing and the soldiers thing, the ancient city thing, etc. I thought it might be amusing to use personal names. Like a Stephen-class Dreadnaught, or, you know, a Bill-class Destroyer. ;) For something more serious, I may come up with some obscrure naming convention based on sections/jobs full of abbreviations and numbers (once, in MoO3 I named all my planets in sequential hexedecimal simply because I was playing as robots. I named all the systems in binary). Otherwise, I may do the "poetic" thing (Avatar of Her Rage, Leaves in a Strong Breeze, etc.) or jab at the keyboard a bunch and then add/remove letters randomly until it's pronouncable ("mjjsrghb" > "Mjosrigh"... not pretty, but doable).

I'm going to pay homage to (i.e. steal) C.J. Cherryh's idea of using country/continent names like Norway and Africa for my Human ships if only to mask their true functions from my opponents.

For alien races I'll make up alien sounding names; Short and guttural for the Tarka (Goh, Rah), full of 'k's for the Hive (tkkr, krks) and long names with lots of vowels for the Liir (eaouaoo, oauaeo).

If it gets too confusing for me to remember what's what I'll switch to a more conventional military naming system.

I wish I had a bigger vocabulary... specifically words starting with "D" and "P"... the "Professional Dismemberer" is the best I can think of for a ship good at killing turrets... :-|

Common themes I use for ship classes in various games, set to:

Scout, Research Ship, Colonizer, Light Capital, Heavy Capital

Birds
Sparrow, Heron, Albatross, Hawk, Eagle

Greek Mythology
Hermes, Athena, Hera, Artemis, Ares

Types of cheese
Cheddar, Brie, Muenster, Edam, Colby

... what?

Whenever I get jammers, I tend to send about fifty of them at the nearest Hiver on simultaneous arrival. Poor guy has a heart attack.

I'm pretty horrible at coming up with cool ship names. However I do expect to field the Murdertanic, the Blastercules, the Awesomenaut, the Slamityville Horror, and the Filliam H. Muffman.

I think I'll use several Naval historical names - trying to stick to size and mission type where it makes sense.

Like, my first missile cruiser will probably be Ticonderoga or even just Aegis; first missile destroyer would be Arleigh Burke.

First "big gun" ships (not sure if that'd be a cruiser or DN) would be Iowa, and I'd probably cycle through the other classic BB names.

Any cloak designs would use submarine class or names - Seawolf, Los Angeles, Red October ;), etc.

Jamming/EW would probably be Intruder; Assault shuttles maybe Iwo Jima...

Though, I'm sure that won't be enough (unless I pull out a US Navy ship registry or something), so I'll probably use some more generic weapon names like someone else said (Scimitar, Rapier, Broadsword, Katana, etc.).

I'm not sure what I'll do for tankers and other support units - I know the Navy has a designation system but I don't know what it is.

I haven't come up with a good CnC system yet, but maybe I'll use the Carrier names for those since they aren't in SotS. Or maybe some more wacky names like the rest of the names from Wing Commander (Tigerclaw, anyone?).
