SotS - it seems like only yesterday

Postby castewar » Thu Mar 15, 2007 1:38 am

We've been digging through old files, organizing, and found some early... really early... no, really, as in well before this messageboard, that early... images. Some are of early concepts that proved unfeasible. Some are quirks and errors. Some are just early itterations of familiar things.

And being a jerk, I'm going to dole them out slowly. For now, let's start with this;

Cool - a fascinating look at the tech tree. Too bad that never made it in, though I can easily imagine it quickly becoming too confusing, especially for newbies not used to such things.

More now, please.

My first thought when looking at that came from a certain congressman...

I wonder what was supposed to be in the center tree.

I'd wager the central tree was Power Techs. Three distinct tiers, highly symmetric distribution of associated techs, minimal linkage from one tier to the next. Also, it looks like the current Power Techs tree, and the Power Techs are central to the game design and least likely to have undergone dramatic changes over the course of design and development.

The flat geometry at the front makes me think that it's meant to link up to another model, i.e., it's a ship section... I'm gonna say early design for one of the Human engine sections?

It really reminds me of the current Antimatter engine section. At least, on a destroyer anyway. But I'm sure you worked on the small stuff before going for the biggest, baddest models on the block. Certainly you wouldn't have started with dreadnoughts. And if I'm wrong may lightning strike me*crack* *jump*

The Skittleverse on steroids?

Replication error on the galaxy population eh?

Or it was supposed to be one world and the system went nuts and gave you all of them maybe?
