I was really hoping we would have full-3d move commands like in the Homeworld games.

So did I really. But even fleet commands and manoeuvres are cool.

I wonder, do we get 3D formations?
ErinysSolForce Intelligence has great difficulty penetrating Liir society to that depth, for obvious reasons. fibioLack of scuba gear?

We would, but we're too mad to do so. It's the chemicals we use in the hat-making process.

I don't know who suggested it, but @ you-guy-with-the-very-complex-solar-systems-idea-on-the-previous-page:
it sounded to me like you'd have the whole solarsystem present in a single battle. Is that not a bit exaggerated? or did I get you wrong?
the strategic aspects you mentioned are cool however

Like I said, there's already talk of having more than just a single world to represent an entire system. How would you choose to implement that? Would you have eight worlds present at a system, with short range strategic movement between them determining which single ball the fight occurs around?

Put the whole thing in. Rocketing around a whole system and whipping past these mobile grav wells could be so much fun, and would lend tactical variation to a game that some say has very little. (They're wrong, but that doesn't help when they stop playing because the can't see the fun :) )

I don't care about 3d move, but I WOULD like 3d formations.

if my ships were just a little bit smarter about going above or below the ship they currently try to fly through, i would not want any more 3d movement.

homeworld's movement commands left me lost...
look, i'm being nice.

Don't sweat it Anaris, if stone had a bit more perspective he would a) realize that while he made a correct observation, in this case its not really an insult b) learn to question why its been 10 years and no HW3 and c) have an epiphany why designing only for yourself and your "cool" friends is almost always a bad idea.

I was one of those people where the 3d element of HW really "clicked" I LOVED the atmosphere of both HW and Cataclysm (oddly I couldn't get into HW2 at all. I think it took me 3 levels to figure out how the autobalancing worked, which ruined the game for me utterly.) I loved the atmosphere, but absolutely HATED the ship design in HW. The ships were an order of magnitude better in Cataclysm (IMO) and it was better in many ways than the original. (Though not quite as good atmosphere, IMO. Less desperate.)

OTOH, SOTS' atmosphere isn't quite as good, but it has 10^10th more replayability for me. Single player, multiplayer, even start, handicapped, 7vs1, there is enough variety and randomness in the game that it keeps me coming back. For me, SOTS is probably my Game of the Decade. I can't think of anything else I played more. . .

That said, I do consider SOTS to have some MAJOR flaws which I hope are addressed in SOTS 2. Mostly having to do with in-combat AI assist, and absolutely bizarre behaviors I've witnessed.

i guess in regards to the 3D maps it would be nice if you could choose how 3D a map is in the setup screen. right now the maps are hard set in their "3Dness" and in order to be able to play a map that is only mildly 3D i need to use a 3rd party map maker (it's full of stars). if the player could choose any 3D % for any map between 0% (flat) or 50% (map is half as thick as it is long and wide) or 100% (map is equally long/wide/thick) or any % in between then everyone could play on a map that is to their taste

as far as 3D combat goes, there's plenty of other games that supply that thrill - and until i get my 3D floating holographic display for my birthday in 2042 i personally want no part in them...
