I actually wasn't around for it so no I don't recall. I'm all ears as to how it turned out. Or didn't turn out...

maybe balti can explain why, despite all the talent in the community, I don't think more than 2 or 3 ship sections got made in 2 years? ;)

As far as I could tell, the modders around the boards at the time put in some work on it, but were ultimately more interested in their own ideas than something some fan committee came up with. Too many idea people and not enough people with the skills, interest, and commitment to get the actual modeling work done.
Zed's TARs (sample):
Fractious Allies -- Hiver vs. Hiver, with allies
Who Let The Bugs Out -- Hiver vs. Tarka and Zuul
Tarka Ascendant -- Tarka vs. Hiver and Zuul

I had a feeling it was something along those lines.

The way Amplitude did it was to do a series of competitions for lore, concept art and then votes on certain specifics. But ultimately the studio did the actual work and made the hard calls on what to cut and change to make the race work mechanically. In then end though, I think it created arguably the most interesting race in the entirety of the Endless Universe.

I don't think that a community only project of that nature is workable without some hard rules and forced focus. Modders can be...quirky. I'll just leave it at that.

I think it is really a question of how much skin someone has in the game.

Developers in this equation are naturally "all in", however much of the gaming community are engaged up to the point of entertainment or validation.

The moment things start looking like actual work, all these idea people evaporate real fast.

Pretty much. And when it comes right down to it, ideas are not where we are challenged at the moment :P

Well if you take a look at say Skyrim's modding scene you realize that something like 95% of the good mods are 1 man/woman efforts while the grandiose community projects like the recreation of Morrowind etc. are pretty much always advertising for help and rarely completed.

I think maybe 2 or three of those at the most ever reached a full release. So yeah, I guess I get what happened with the community made SotS race.

Having ideas and then actually creating them are two totally different things.
Sword of the Stars 2 : Project Hiver - work in progress
Sword of the Stars 2 : Vanilla AI Enhancement Mod - Alpha Version 6 now Available.
Creator of the upcoming Seimei universe.

it would get made like any game gets made...convincing skilled people to believe in your vision and then convince them to work hard bringing it to reality.

Well, I am a 20+ year C++/Java developer that would totally donate coding time to see something SOTS related come to fruition.

Ideas are the easy part, I have had more than one kid of friends ask me how to get into the games industry. Almost every one of them wants to be a designer and/or idea guy. I usually tell them to take math and writing classes, read everything they can (science, history, and everything in between) and start working on projects now while they have the time. Start modding or coming up with their own work and expect it to take years and during that time they may have to go to QA or another route to break in.

The sad truth is it is a hard industry to be in with typically long hours and poor pay....unless you are one of the superstars but that still takes lots of work to get to that point. You can expect to be let go when projects finish or worse you may poor 3-5 years of your life into a project to have it get canceled.

That is why I left and went into IT work, not as much fun but easier to have a life outside of work.
