The woes of running SotS Prime on OS X

Post by Cainan » Tue Oct 04, 2016 11:32 am

This is just a note so that anyone else who tries to do what I've done, will have a more recent source of data.

I recently did away w/ Bootcamp and Parallels when i upgrade to my latest mac laptop.
This is a great space saver since i seldom boot windows on this system, but put my ability to play SotS Prime at risk.

I have CrossOver 15, and tried to install SotS Prime on it.
Here is what I've discovered.

Wine/CrossOver on OS X w/:
- Nvidia GPU: Works 100%
- Intel GPU: 80% functionality. tactical Combat Display is bonkered.
All support requests to Wine and CrossOver devs result in the same message: This is due to OS X's intel Drivers, and outside the control of the Devs to correct.

I installed it temporarily on a friends Nvidia powered Mac Pro, and It runs fine under CrossOver, moreover it suffers all the same noted behaviors (combat loads faster fullscreen, slower windowed, etc)

When playing it on an Intel Graphics Mac, everything is beautiful until you go into your first Combat. Then you are greated with a special screen lik ethe one attached here.

I got sots running on OSX Mountain Lion just by installing with wine.

The game ran fine for me except that in all planetary combat maps the shaders were fubared (albeit differently from yours). By chance I realized that in interstellar combats the problem went away, so I messed around with the game files and deleted some file having to do with planet shaders (I think?). The problem is I forgot which file it was so since I reinstalled after a wine reinstall the game is all messed up again and I'm going crazy trying to remember which file I deleted.

Anyway good luck! If I ever figure it out I'll post it in here.

Thats extremely Interesting.

I'll have to do some test this weekend and see if i can reproduce your results.

I wonder if we can convince a Dev to chime in and point us at the right potential file(s).

I'd gladly take a degraded visual experience to be able to have a functional planetary combat. It would mean i can SotS on the go. (and in boring metings)

Literally there is no one on staff who has worked on those systems. The game is a decade old.

Your probably best solution is to bootcamp into Windows, and install it there.

Hey, I just figured out the fix I was discussing above. There's a file called skydefs.txt located at Sword\ of\ the\ Stars/sots.gob/Models/Skysphere/skydefs.txt

Open it up and copy paste the entries for "Deep space skies" over those for "In-system skies" (that is, section 1 over section 2)... This 100% fixed my shader issues on Mac OS 10.12.1 under wine.

Happy new year my droogs.

You so rock!

I wasn't able to follow your steps to an instant solution, so i just cut out all the in system entries from the file and it works perfect!
(okay.. in-system combats have a very BORING black background atm.. but HEY! i can actually PLAY on my mac, in Crossover!)

I'm testing a couple things, and once done, one way or the other, i will upload a 'fixed' file for those of us who has this woe.

Thanks again for coming back to the issue, and posting what you remembered!

For now, i need to leave. I have a galaxy to save now...

Okay I have attached the zip file that contains the folders+file needed to make SotS run underneath any Wine-based emulator on OSX.
It simply cuts out the 'sky' entries for InSystem skies. This makes for a boring-ish planetary fights, since instead of a cool cosmic background, youu have straight black nothingness.

But at least the fights ARE playable.

Another note.. this will not 'fix' any existing Saves ported from a PC. those planets already have cached skydef data.

I tried mixing and matching entries from the file, and even tryed resizing the skyboxes from 512x512 to 1024x512 thinking that might be the issue.. no such luck.
Anyone else who wants to try to see if we can get a better solutio, feel free to ping me and discuss what i tried/haven't tried.
