... because phasor PD mounts is made from a 76% handwaviumalloy?

Eggzaktly. So build the beamer mounts outta the same wachacallinit alloy but duct-tape a simpler tech weap in the grips.

I know. Stop stating the obvious and get to MAKING those UV beamer PD turrets.

AFAIK, beamers have a shorter range than a DN's personal space bubble, so if you put some on a DN, you'll get beamer PD!

Because there are none.

I guess some weapons are supposed to be easier to be used in fast turrets than others... You could ask this question for any weapon in the game and you can't expect the devs to make a separate PD version for each one.

Every small turret acts as PD anyway.

I know there are none. I was suggesting to implement some earlier, but the argument was that beamers are slow at tracking, thus me arguing the point. GIEF!!

P.S.: Small weaps will never replace dedicated PD in any situation.

Phasers PD can track fast because its not a laser (unlike Green and UV lasers) and because its an AM era weapon.
While beamers track poorly due to the technical limitations on their power supply equipment.
This is why beamers make poor dedicated PD turrets.

Arrrgh.... just make 'em and see what happens. ><

Grr. My point is that the scatter effect of all other PD make it a LOT less effective.

Beamer power source troubles? Gimme a break. If the US can develop a light-based AMS, why can't hi-tech aliens create something with a lot more punch? ....

Laser PD is your "light based AMS".
But the sustained beams require much more power...

Maybe because the Gods of the Tech Tree bit your ass and you didn't random into PD Phaser?

Sounds like you didn't random into enough understanding about laser miniaturization either then. ;)

Umm.... did I stay in cryosleep a few millenia too many? Which US laser AMS fires light *bursts* (with a beginning and an end) that move at the target at sublight speed and provide recoil (or whatever it is that generates projectile spread)?

Last I remember the current lo-tech lasers actually... can you believe it?... were just beams of light - with no beginning or end. Just a steady bombardment of photons, moving at lightspeed and hitting the target as precisely as a beamer.

P.S.: George Lucas (or whoever pioneered the blaster idea) needs to take a good long look into his closest secondary school physics book.

P.S.2: Fine, if sustaining a beam requires too much power - make it short burst. But KEEP LASERS LASERS!! >< Light moves in a bloody straight line, o.k.? Got that? Got that?

That becomes a "RL physics vs what looks good" argument. I agree that I wouldn't mind having lasers be beams, but keep in mind, realistic lasers wouldn't be visible at all, beams OR bolts.

Finally... a post that I actually agree with.

For the sake of arguement - not completely. If in a polluted atmosphere then the beam will reflect off particles, or just heat 'em up til they glow, so there will be traces of visuals... but, since this is space and there is nothing to glow in teh void, the look good factor is more important for a game. However, burst lasers have ALWAYS annoyed the hell out of me in any kind of game, so, at least, don't REFER to them as lasers if only to keep me happy.
