Point Defense

You say phaser PD isn't working... what version are you running? There was a bug affecting phaser PD in some versions that has since been fixed by 1.8.0...

I'm running a SOTS: complete collection Via steam. It, apparently, has no updates running through the steam client.

If you're running 1.8.0 (you should be) then you'll need to check what arcs your PD phasers have versus the incoming attacks and make sure they are in fact in arc to fire. That's the only reason I can think of why they wouldn't. Note that most arcs have limits to how far above or below the plane they will fire, which aren't necessarily immediately obvious because the arc display tools just show the horizontal component.

I'll try and kit out a testbed frigate loaded to the brim with them, Liir or some such and give it a go. If not, I'll see if I can dig out the version. Navigating Steam to find out is a bit of a pain.

EDIT: Apparently it is version 1.8.0. I'll experiment. Thanks for the advice regardless, everyone.

It can also help to use the roll commands, [ and ], to expose underused firing arcs - particularly if you are up against a well-populated planet with all those planetary missiles coming in from above and below the combat plane.

I agree.

But I often wonder if the benefit of sitting stationary while shooting is worth more than rolling to bring extra (charged) weapons into arc.

Not if the guns aren't in arc. ;)

But if only some are in arc, is it better to roll to get more in arc or to accept a slower rate of firing as one waits for the non-rolling weapons to recharge?

I suppose it would depend on the specifics, but for most ships, the side-firing PD weapons generally are not great at shooting things very far above or below the plane, and can only fire at the last moment. If you roll, they can get much better angles of attack and potentially multiple firing opportunities, especially if continuously rolling. The tradeoff is that rolling tends to mess with your ability to turn, so it's best to do when you are stationary or only needing to move dead ahead -- which is why this comes up most often when bombarding a planet from a stationary position in orbit.
