Do you ever bother with Corrosive/Nanite missiles?

Post by Setokaiva » Thu Apr 14, 2011 6:22 am

title says it all. Do you ever use these and/or find them useful? I know two ways to use;

1. Have ships with said missiles mounted on hold fire, set to target empty space in front of enemy. Launch missiles one at a time by clicking their pictures, this creates clouds the enemy will hopefully plunge into.

2. Force enemy to remain in a spot (disruptors/EMP's spring to mind) and stack clouds on him.

They are great against certain GMs.

Otherwise, I often used them as a cheap large turret option before the latest weapon tech repricing, but not so much since as the cost to research has gone up considerably. I found they work best against DDs, but pair them with inertial cannons and they should be pretty good against most things.

They're pretty great against those poor maneuverability DN's...

Providing you can catch those poor maneuverability DNs when they don't already have a head of steam, yeah. :)

Implosion Mine COL + Nanite Missiles.
Lt. Bourne: Sir, sentries report no more Zuul contacts. All of them gone. It's a miracle.
Cap. Chard: If it's a miracle, Lieutenant, it's a long barrel Impactor with Neutronium rounds miracle.
Lt. Bourne: And Phasers, sir, with some guts behind them.

Corrosive? No. Nanites, it depends... If there's an AI present, then most likely yes.

I usually prefer direct-fire weapons for my large mounts, but I'll use Corrosives or Nanites if I've had a bad roll on other weapons. I really should probably try and use them more often; they're pretty powerful.

Do Corrosive or Nanite Missiles' DOT stack? Eg. overlapping clouds.

Yep...also its interesting how people who do NOT use them often post about how hard it is to deal with firing lines of impactors

I like pairing them with COL minefields in my defensive fleets.

Practically any build designed to be used in an evasive manner has them if possible. Liir Torpedo boats (It's a missile! Whee!), CnCs etc.

The big advantage with Corrosive+torpedoes is that if they don't have PD they're doomed. If they don't have enough PD to take out all the torpedoes they'll have to pursue or they're doomed (well, except impactors. Occasionally) and corrosive/nanite missiles love pursuing enemy PD boats. Go through the corrosive cloud (which is released even if it's destroyed by PD), or lose distance by going around it. Either way it's a win/win for me.
You can't trust the Liir. Never trust someone that smiles all the time.

Nice, but is kiting with torpedo CR even practical? They tend to turn rather slowly...

Liir turn quickly and can more easily move in other directions than the one they are facing, compared to other races. It probably depends on relative engine tech overall, though.

I tends to use them when I fight the Zuul if I sucked at the PD... Their boarding pods are so strong not mentioning they are standard weapon for large ships and late games since it's basically DN+CR actions, they have a lot of boarding pods to throw... moreover, the boarding pods can disable your ship for quite a while, shutting down your shield, make them float around while getting pounded, not mentioning if they got your newest powerhouse CR, or even worse, a DN... yeah... (I once had one of my state of the art assault/barrage DN with top armor captured by the Zuul who is using low tier weapons and first tier armor, and try to shot what was mine DN down is not quite fun.) after that, I started investing heavily on PD/secondary PD, but I still tends to get overwhelmed late game. Then I happened to field a couple nanite missile ships and pop them around the Zuul ships at long range and surprisingly the cloud destroyed all their pods (although didn't do too much damage to the hull, which is really not a big deal to me. =P), I started to spam them, esp if I got smart nanite. Until the morrigi made their revenge with the EW command, lol.
