Lasers (including pulse-phasers)

Post by Mecron » Tue Jul 25, 2006 6:19 am

Your place to ask questions and make observations about Laser Weapons in the Sots Universe. Lasers are small turret weapons and also come in a point defence variant.

when creating an armor destroyer, you have a medium mount. if you place a laser there, will it be a bigger one or will it just make the ship cheaper?

I haven't tested this out yet but what I've read indicates that if you put a light weapon in a medium mount it adds another barrel, and if in a heavy mount it would add a third barrel. I plan on testing this out when I get back from work.

Yup, a medium mount will hold 2 small weapons of the same type while a Large mount will hold 3 small weapons or 2 medium. So, for example, putting Red lasers or Gauss Cannons in a medium turret will give you two shots aimed at a single spot instead of just one if you use a plasma cannon. This works really great with ballistic weapons like the Gauss Cannons. :)

Question regarding laser research.
We start with red and then can research green and UV. What is the point of researching green when we can just go right to UV?

It's that you might not start with a link from red to UV. You always have a link from Green to UV.
All offers void where prohibited, but especially in Quebec.

Ahh so I lucked out being able to SKIP green lasers.
Ok, that makes sense, thanks.

Love the game, but I really stink at tactical combat!

I have yet to start a game without a link from red to uv. I have also yet to start a game with pd.

What's a pulse-phaser? I want one just from the name.

As best I can figure from the wiki phasers are continous beam energy cannons (think Ion Beams from Homeworld) and pulse phasers are a version of the weapon that sends out a whole bunch of tiny pulses of energy instead of a massive stream.

have you ever seen star trek DS9? phaser = sustained beam. pulse phaser = small beams fired in rapid succession (what the defiant had).

Pulse Phasors also have a very distinct firing noise which is pleasing to my ears. Load up a dread with them babies and fire a pulse phasor broadside... so beautiful.... makes me want to cry.
