Well, if you plan on gambling for AI fire-control later on, it may be a good idea to switch back to the less accurate but more painful standard mass-driver rounds.

But that is an entirely different can of worms.

There's also the consideration that fire control can be useful for energy cannons as well as for ballistics, but IMX people don't often switch horses in mid-stream regarding which weapons tree they are digging into, without a strong motivation to do so.

Fractious Allies -- Hiver vs. Hiver, with allies
Who Let The Bugs Out -- Hiver vs. Tarka and Zuul
Tarka Ascendant -- Tarka vs. Hiver and Zuul

When I play Zuul I mitch-match the weapons with the ship
I realize that pulsars are not part of the Canadian military arsenal, but I find that if you shampoo an angry beaver aggressively with "oily hair" shampoo to dry out it's fur and rub it vigorously against a balloon before flinging it at the enemy with a trebuchet, you get a similar effect.

That strong motivation being that it makes your weapon loadout hard to counter?
Also, if you find yourself shorted in one tree you can easily move to the other.
I generally research either plasma cannons or particle beams (and emitters) no matter what my weapons of choice are, because they'll be very useful against those swarm queens that love to kill your new colonies.

I usually wait until I find I need to start developing a second weapons package, or expect to need one soon, before I start down another line. (e.g. I'm using ballistics and the enemy is starting to field lots of deflectors etc.) Until then, I can usually find more urgent priorities for my research dollars. ;)

As far as the swarm goes, I've never really had much of a problem with them. Of course I haven't had much opportunity to play in the most recent patch either.

It's a shame Stormers get deflected so easily. They're a wonderful weapon concept, and the ballistics tree could do with a weapon really suited for hammering capitol ships.

Who'll join in me in holding out for AP Stormers?

Okay, true, rail cannons are very, very good at what they do. I guess I should clarify that I mean a weapon for a brawler, not something with which you sit back and fling huge shells at the enemy... Incredibly fun as that is.

Let's do something about that, shall we?

A.k.a. If you're in nice and close, the enemy can kill their pretty little ships bye-bye
