Image As you can see from the datafile, our forces will soon converge on Shandor for a coordinated strike.
Image This is the strike the Liir have been telling us about. Monty and Flipper are already on their way aboard the "Cleanser of Waters".
Image Those Liir aren't fooling around! They've got a huge force on the way, slowboating across normal space.
Image I wouldn't call the Liir Flickerwarp slowboating!
Image We'll arrive at the same time in any case. We've already sent some of our older support ships ahead.
Image What's that little purple triangle below the planet represent?
Image That, my dear, is a hiver gate.
Image The hivers have a gate at the Zuul homeworld?
Image That's what the Liirian deep space probes tell us. This is why we must confront the threat now! A combined hiver-zuul faction could eliminate us all!
Image They would combine Zuul rip drive for offense with the hiver teleportation gates for defense! They would be unstoppable!
Image Now you see why we've got to go...
Image Yes, Uncle Guffy. I'm going too!
Image Violet, you stay here with the support ships.
Image I won't be left behind again!
Image Fine, I see you won't be dissuaded. You can pilot the repair ship...
Image The repair ship? I don't see how I can contribute in a repair ship!
Image Violet, we _all_ fight! That repair ship will be seeing plenty of combat... We leave at 0600.

Image I see the Liir have arrived as well. Fire up the engines!
Image Proceeding forward with caution, sir...
Image Form up the "Wall of Steel" we'll need some protection from these Zuul missiles!
Image Formation check! Ready to proceed!
Image Repair ships forming inner ring.
Image All ships descend orbit towards the planet. Let's see if we can converge with the Liir.
Image Aye aye, sir!
Image Admiral, I'm reading multiple missile signatures!
Image Man the point defense turrets!
Image Those are corrosive missiles, sir!
Image Evasive actions, immediately!

Think you can do better than Guffy? Play the Battle of Shandor! The save game is here:

Posting a savegame at the end is a really classy touch.

I somehow can't seem to be able to play the savegame. :(
It comes up with an error and I don't know what's wrong.

Some weird thing. I guess I should post about it in the tech support forum.

Well, I managed to load it...and I lost the battle of Shandor. :(
The Black took plenty of Zuul and roaches with them though.

You may have to reissue attack orders to the humans to get them to participate in the fight. I saved the game after telling them to get over to Shandor. Sometimes those messages don't stay saved if you haven't hit the end turn button.

Alternatively, try playing the humans. They have a much smaller force that needs to be careful in this firefight. The "Wall of Steel" is a ring of XRay laser Armour DEs. For more spice, see if you can keep the repair ship alive--its got Violet in it!

The "Reincarnation" Dreadnaught really kicked butt in this battle! The combination of energy absorber and barrage sections really did a number on the energy heavy Zuul. Eventually, the "Reincarnation" had to retreat from battle, since it was getting pretty beat up. The "Projection of Anger" and "Absense of Being" eventually replaced it.

On my poky PC, it took about 2 hours to finish 10 min worth of combat. Of course, I was pausing to issue orders and snap photos along the way.

Speaking of photos, here's a shot of the "Reincarnation" in action:

does it mark retreats as a loss, then?

Yes, retreats are always considered a loss, even if you slaughtered the opposition. In my case, I didn't retreat, just ran out of time. I was trying to kill the planet, which takes quite a bit of time. I should have gone after the gate...

In the laboratory of Dr. Ludvig...

Image
Image How could the Vice-roy do this to me? My work is too important to be halted on the whims of mere political figures!
Image Umm, maybe you could write him a letter about it?
Image I will do more than write a letter! Get me the Viceroy on the viewscreen immediately!
Image Yes, Cell Leader. I will do so immediately!
Image How many times must I tell you, its Dr. Ludvig now!
Image Yes, Dr. Ludvig. I have reached the Viceroy's office.
Image The Viceroy is busy. What you want?
Image I don't want to speak to some idiot coterie girl! Give me the Viceroy, now!
Image The Viceroy is busy. What you want?
Image I want my subjects back. I think they may be very important in locating the creators. Now get me the Viceroy!
Image Prisoners gone. Seeker Prime wants them. Go to Shandor. Queen's legion takes them.
Image Cut the connection.
Image Yes, cell--Dr Ludvig. The connection is cut.
Image So, the Viceroy sends my subjects to Shandor...
Image I guess that's that, then... Were you going to vivisect that Hiver, or can I poke around?
Image Cease your idiotic blather. I'm thinking...
Image Right.
Image How goes the construction of the Rending Bore?
Image It nears completion, Dr. Ludvig.
Image Have Igor fetch my things. You may accompany me as well. We leave for Shandor on the hour.
Image What?
Image Do I need to give you written instructions? Follow my orders you fool!
Image Yes, sir! To Shandor it is!
Image Now if I can only decode what these recordings mean... Those sparks... The empathatic broadcasts... I will have it done soon. I must!
