Stormers eat framerate :(

Post by Janster » Wed Oct 29, 2008 6:48 am

My games have been close to unplayable everytime someone invents stormers, my Gforce 8600 + AMD Phenom X4 simply can't handle them. A battle that is supposed to take 3 mins takes 15 :(

I'd like to see an option to reduce stormer effects :(

I've got a similar rig on my laptop and the games runs smoothly with 40 klackons all shooting stormers constantly...might be a problem with your comp

Just noticed I hardly use cpu power during fights, maybe the gfx card sucks, but seriously, it runs Farcry relativly well...so whats up.

Try disabling hardware sound if it isn't already. SotS uses the DirectSound API, and DirectSound sucks hard.

I have no problems with stormer effects, and I'm running a much lower end system then you. Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon 3800 X2
nVidia Geforce 7300 GT (512 Mb vRAM)
1.75 gigs of system RAM
sound blaster xifi gamer

To be honest with you... you might wanna check your drivers and direct x updates... or forcing SotS to be single core (since you have 4 cores).

Trying to figure it out now. My current awesome 2 vs 4 game is bogging down hard on the battles. I just entered a 3 vs 2 battle, and had to quit cause it was just not getting anywhere.

I use a Phenom AMD X4 black ed.
2 gb RAM.
Nvidia 8600 gforce
Win Xp

Nothing particularly special with my rig, but it runs Farcry on high relativly well tbh.

Good assumption, however I do have a soundblaster LE something installed. So its not using the motherboard crap stuff.

Personally its whenever there be stormers my fps really goes to the shits.

I have particle distance on zero, and I have started turning down gfx shitloads. However I think my gforce might not be good at particle rendering.

Strange that my lower end 7300 has no issues...

I have a decent rig (check my Xfire Gaming Rig profile) and i do get a little hang up when the stormers are about to shoot the first time in a fight. It only happens once per battle when the first stormer shot is about to be fired, after that it's smooth sailing all the way to the end.

I think the stormer/gauss bullets are actually represented as two-dimensional "sprites" and aren't treated as "particles" so the particle distance slider wouldn't affect them directly.

Janster: Did disabling hardware sound help at all?

I noticed the same thing too, usualy a major stutter/pause the first time they get fired and then quite a bit of slowdown when they are in heavy use.

I tried setting all graphic options to the lowest possible but oddly that didnt help at all. My thoughts were it could be just the amount of calcs it has to do trying to decide each projectile's path and hits etc

Tried no hardware sound and that didnt help. Guess it could be a driver issue or something ..ah the joys of PC gaming ;p

I wasn't using hardware sound, so its not that.

I have attempted some fixes, but its clear the slowdown is linked to the storm weapons and when they fire, cause if there is a battle using anything else, its pretty decent.
