Read First: SotS/BoB/CE Problems (All Dists)

Post by Kludgy » Sat Aug 26, 2006 8:17 pm

Here is a list of the most common problems that players have experienced with the retail version of SotS. Please take care to read these first before starting a new topic:

After applying the latest SotS 1.5.2 update, the game will not start and instead displays a message box with the text: "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."
Some runtime libraries in Windows are missing, which may occur with new installs of the OS. The necessary library installer can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Sword of the Stars works fine for me, but after upgrading to Born of Blood the game fails to start -or- crashes immediately.
Some DirectX 9 components may be out of date. Reinstall the latest DirectX 9 runtime to solve this. The latest automatic installer can be found at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Based on this topic:
viewtopic.php?t=5607&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=30

IMPORTANT: The Microsoft automatic installer may not work for you. If it does not, then the February 2007 DirectX redistributable package must be downloaded and installed manually. The package can be found here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Game won't start in Windows Vista (DirectX9 not installed)
SotS requires DirectX 9, which is not provided with Windows Vista by default. Visit http://www.microsoft.com/directx for more information.

Immediate crash upon launching Sword of the Stars (no session.log file is generated) up to version 1.1.1.
Microsoft Windows Update KB917422 (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917422) causes the SecuROM copy protection on Sword of the Stars to crash. A suggested workaround is to uninstall the update, but this must be done at your own discretion.

Based on this topic:
viewtopic.php?p=50356#50356

No-CD crack causes crashes.
The known "sword.exe" crack does not work correctly and is not supported.

Cannot connect to internet games: Wrong version.
Make sure that you have the retail 1.2.2 patch applied:
http://www.lighthouse-interactive.com/i ... hive&type=

Visual glitches, crash or the computer reboots (possibly with a blue screen of death). -or- Crash or the computer reboots (possibly with a blue screen of death).
This is the single most common problem, and it is almost always caused by having out of date drivers. Make sure that your audio and video drivers are up to date.

It has been determined that a some audio hardware and driver combinations suffer from hardware audio mixing bugs that can cause these symptoms. In SotS 1.2.1 there is an option to disable hardware audio mixing from within the game. In older versions this can still be accomplished by going to the Windows Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Advanced > Performance and setting hardware acceleration to minimum.

Some 3D elements of the game (such as ships or the tech tree) are not visible or are rendered incorrectly.
Make sure your video card meets min spec for the game.

Game silently shuts down when combat ends while ALT+TABBED out. -or- Game crashes occassionally. (Not very repeatable.) -or- Game crashes when the turn is ended. (Repeatable with save game.)
The retail 1.1.1 patch addresses all known causes of these crashes.

Some animations play extremely fast. -or- No Connection occurs for the Host of a multiplayer game.
This is a known issue with a combination of certain dual-core CPU's and a bug in an important Windows timer function. In SotS version 1.2.1 and later, you can address this by adding the following to your sots.ini file:

Code: Select all

[CPU]
ForceSingleCore=1

No Connection occurs occassionally while playing multiplayer.
The retail 1.1.1 patch addresses known causes of this problem. If you still experience these problems, forward UDP port 3369 to your PC.

When playing versus AI opponents the application is unresponsive for an excessively long time (5+ minutes).
If you're playing the D2D distribution of the game, this is known to contribute to the length of turns for certain PC configurations. In general this delay should not be more than a few seconds, and we're looking into other options to cut it down even further.

The mouse arrow does not move. -or- The mouse arrow does not display correctly.
Since 1.1.1 you can revert back to normal Windows style mouse arrows by adding the following to the sots.ini file in your install directory:

Code: Select all

[Graphics]
UseD3DCursor=False

The time compression keys (CTRL+PAGEUP and PAGEDOWN) don't work after applying the Euro 1.1.1 patch.
If the Euro 1.1.1 patch was applied after the game was played for the first time, then the existing player profiles will be missing keybindings for time compression. There are two ways to fix this:
1) Remove all keybindings by deleting the entire [KeyBindings] section in the Profile_XXX.ini files found in the Profiles folder. The next time the game is loaded, default keybindings will be applied.
2) Fill in your own keybindings for the time compression actions in the same ini files:

Code: Select all

UIC_TAC_TIMECOMPRESS_INC=PAGEUP+CTRL
UIC_TAC_TIMECOMPRESS_DEC=PAGEDOWN+CTRL

Some parts of some ships appear semi-transparent in the game.
This visual artifact is known to occur when the shader level is not set to full. It affects versions of the game up to SotS 1.2.2. (If you have an older video card, full shader support may not be an option.) A simple hotfix can be found here: http://www.kerberos-productions.com/hot ... hotfix.zip
Unpack the zip file to a new folder and follow the instructions contained within README.TXT to apply the hotfix.

If you have encountered a crash that was not described above, you may e-mail the mars.dmp and session.log files to me and I will investigate as soon as time permits.

How do we go about uninstalling this update?

If you downloaded it seperatly, it might be listed in your Add/Remove Programs list. If it isn't listed there, here is what you can try:

Check out this page - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924867/
This is the problem that is caused by the security update. It lists both a workaround and a link ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 2026E01714 ) that leads to an update that might fix the issue without uninstalling the security update.

The link to the Direct X files for fixing BoB is wrong. That links to the 8/4/2004 runtime files. The new runtime files should be dated 6/5/07.

Link should be http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

I've followed both links but for some reason the update doesn't want to load. Any ideas as to why?

You mean the links to the DirectX? I have no idea why you are having those problems cantleyc and Pincher, but I do have an alternate link. You can download the directx_jun2007_redist.exe file. This is the redistributable and should update your directx no matter what. Plus there should be no web loader involved

I followed that link and it updated my stuff, however the game will still not run. Should I reinstall the game?

That wouldn't be a bad idea. But if a reinstall doesn't work, go ahead and create a new thread about the problem. Include a description of what happens when you try to run the game (does it try to run and crash, does it just not even try to start), info on your processor (is it dual core or not) and what OS you are using. Also check to see if you have a sots.ini file or a mars.dmp file. If you have them, they will be in the same folder as the game executable.

No luck. I emailed Kludgy with the mars and session files, hopefully he can help figure this out.
