Did you check the volume levels in the game options?

I've lost my manual...

Post by Lethallarry » Sat Aug 25, 2007 3:18 am

I'm trying to reinstall the game, but now I can't find my CD key - I can only assume it was on the manual, which my kids have lost.
So:
Is the CD key, in fact, on the manual? or elsewhere?
If it is on the manual, am I now, officially, screwed?

If its in a DVD box it can usually be found inside the box under the DVD/CD, older games in CD cases have them on the backside of the case. If you cant find any cd-keyes there then it probably was inthe manual.

Or PM me for the Cracked version for SP only...

Heya

They are printed on the back page of the Manual.

They are also kept intact in the Registry.

If you have a "System Restore" point prior to the uninstall, then I would suggest setting a manual System Restore point, restoring to the earlier version, checking the Registry for the key then rolling forward again.

I already checked the box/case thingy (big black plastic type - I guess it's a DVD box) - inside, outside, and even in the sleeve, to see if the CD key was anywhere in there - no dice

As for a system restore, since the last time I had the game installed, my computer got badly infected with viruses - I had to format the hard drive. If there was a registry of what the CD key is, then it's certainly gone now.....

I've been using the box to interrogate my kids and wife.

still can't find the manual.
Is there any way to get a replacement manual/cd key?
I have the box and the original CD, just not the manual.

The CD key is a touchy subject, I don't think they can just hand out new ones. As for the Manual, I bellive theres a PDF version of it in the CD.

I suspect if you return the original box and CD to to Lighthouse, they would be willing to ship you a new one. The issue is proof of purchase and not getting a second free copy without paying for it, so if you return the original it should cover your bases. I'd suggest going over to the Lighthouse forums and bringing it up there.

Actually, once the game installs, it's in your SotS directory... :P

thanks for the replies, guys!
So, any idea who I'd need to contact?
And do you know if anyone at Kerberos might be able to help?

Try posting in the Lighthouse forums. I don't think Kerberos has much if any say in this sort of thing.

Hello,

I am having this very issue of the game not starting at all in Windows Vista (Home Edition). I installed DirectX as per instructions, but BoB will not start at all (Sword of the Stars original does start and run).

I [BLEEP]ing hate Vista, but its what came with my p.o.s. laptop. It won't let a program create files in its own directory unless you run as Administrator, and doing so I get a session log attempting to start BoW:

Root directory: "C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\Sword of the Stars - Born of Blood"
Mounting current directory... OK
Mounting sots_local_en.gob... OK
Mounting sots.gob... OK
Warning: Could not create D3D Device!

According to DXDIAG, Direct 3D is enabled, but I cannot access acceleration settings in the Display Settings. My graphics adapter is the Intel Mobile 945 Express.
