Yes, plain boxed version. But everything after that is direct download.

The vanilla sots, from the box, installs fine. So does the Born of Blood download from Gamer's Gate.

It is during the AMOC installation (also downloaded from Gamersgate) that I have the problem.

Hope that helps.

Where are you installing the game to? If you are installing to the default location, then that might be your problem right there. Win7 and Vista hates it when you try to install anything to C:\Program Files\ (which is the default install location). Instead try installing the game to c:\Games\Sword of the Stars or any other non-Program Files location.

Also check the first post in this thread. Several runtime libraries in Windows may be missing or you may need to update your version of dx9. Remember that DirectX 9 is not installed by default on Win7 and Vista machines and often will not be updated by Windows Update.

I tried to start in *right click* *start as admin* mode and that didn't help either...

As a note, it did not install to the default location, W7 changed it to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Lighthouse Interactive\Sword of the Stars\

My suggestion is this:
    1.) Un-install the game
    2.) Begin installation again
2a.) When prompted to where to install, change it to "C:\Games\Lighthouse Interactive\Sword of the Stars\"
3.) Continue installation and all updates and downloads as normal making sure it goes to the "C:\Games\..." location.

The reason for this is Windows Vista and Windows 7 both 'protect' the Program Files (x86) and other default installation directories. This sometimes causes problems with installations and/or program operations.

Personally, I use a second hard drive for my Games and the primary drive for applications and utilities.

Sword of the Stars
Born of Blood
Collector's Edition

Not specific issues in same :)

I have installed SotS CE v1.8 which includes BoB, AMoC and ANY in the installation, DVD version.
The game will not run.
It's installed in D:\Games\Sword of the Stars and the registry values are correct.
I've updated all my device drivers to their latest version, DirectX latest version, latest vcredist_x64.exe, reinstalled the game, rebooted after install, all I can think of is up to date.

I run Vista Ultimate 6.0 build 6002 (64-bit)
AMD Phenomenon II X4 955
4 Gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
Generic PnP monitor driver for my projector with a custom resolution of 1832 * 1034
Realtek High Definition Audio

Is this sufficient information?
I start the executable, the screen flickers for a few seconds, then the process ends and nothing happens.

I want to play this game!!! What can I do to make it work?

My guess is a issue with your display.cfg file not showing the proper custom resolution. So to fix it, try this:

Go to D:\Games\Sword of the Stars and find the display.cfg file. Open it with notepad. Check the following lines to be sure that they read correctly:

Code: Select all

width 1832
height 1034
fullscreenWidth 1832
fullscreenHeight 1034

If they don't look like the above, change them to match, save the file (making sure that it still is named display.cfg after saving) and try starting your game. If that doesn't work, you may try posting your session.log, which is also located in your D:\Games\Sword of the Stars folder.

Thank you. After I altered the resolution like you suggested, the session log gave me "Warning: Could not create D3D Device!" after I had manually changed display.cfg, so I changed "windowed 0" to "windowed 1" and now it works! :D

It would be helpful to know the stats on the machine you are using...especially the graphic card.
