Battles: game hangs, goes black, occasional CTD

Post by new.orendor » Wed Feb 11, 2015 12:47 am

Hi!

SOTS 1 used to run beautifully on my laptop, but after I was forced to do a system refresh and reinstall of the game, I have been experiencing problems.

THE PROBLEMS:

in tactical battles, especially when zoomed in on a particular ship, the game will stutter and then hang for a few seconds (often the screen goes black with the exception of certain hud elements - like the targeting ring). At first the game would resume normally (and the problem was only once every 5-10 battles or so) but now it has happened twice in 3 turns, and both times the game crashed. Now pretty much every time I load the save, the game crashes during one of the battles that turn.
The problem occurs in both small and large battles. (last crash was in a battle with less than 15 ships, at the very end, when only 7 ships and 3 sats remained)
At one point, steam ran in metro mode, but crashed due to a D3D error (I think - message flashed too quickly to see whole thing)
  • Problem seems to occur most often when a ship is destroyed
  • this problem is not race specific. I am playing as Humans, and have fought the Tarka, Morrigi, Zuul, and participated in battle alongside Liir. Problem spotted in all. Haven't fought Hivers much yet.
  • Ive noted this problem most often fighting the Tarka, Probably not significant.

    WHAT I'VE DONE SO FAR:
  • applied 4gb patch. discovered steam would not allow game to run (error code 51) verified install, game runs now, problem persists
  • updated graphics, and rapid storage drivers using drivers specific to my machine, problem persists, game now crashes
  • Saw in session file Fleetman being unmapped was possible cause, remapped it. Didn't help
  • ran dxdiag, no apparent problems
  • updated windows
  • checked tech support forums, modified display.config with following:

    Code: Select all

    [Graphics]
    UseD3DCursor=False

Instead of going black, the game textures became blocky and flashed (appeared then dissapeared) The problem is now reproducible in my last autosave. When the game crashed, it froze instead of crashing directly to the desktop.
  • saved session files and mars.dmp from crashes, most recent crash mars dump is attached, session files are below

    MY SYSTEM:
  • Dell inspiron 15-3537
  • CPU: intel i5-4200U CPU @ 1.60GHz 2.30GHz
  • RAM: 6.00 gb
  • intel HD graphics, chipset info attached (4400)
Note: I'm going to attempt a reinstall
Note: I've shuffled my profile and saved games from computer to computer once or twice, can that cause problems?

The dxdiag didn't fit into the first post, it is attached here.

Thanks for your help! I'll post any solution in the first post, should one be found.

1st) You are running this game on windows 8.1 when it was clearly designed for windows XP. Are you running it in windows XP compatibility mode?

2nd) Using an onboard chipset, and not a dedicated graphics card could also result in the behavior you are describing. I would suggest buying a good quality graphics card.

1) I tried it now. It seemed to help a little bit. The game didn't crash, only hung until I minimized and then opened up the game again. The problem occurred during a zuul missile barrage and the session file said
Warning: [Idle] animation set not found.

I think the problem may lie elsewhere, seeing as the game ran smoothly for 90 hours (2 full games) before problems began occurring.

2) That is unfortunate. I had hoped that problem was limited to SOTS ][. Based on the comparisons I've read, the particular chipset I have is capable of overclocking out of the box to reach speeds comparable to high end dedicated cards from when SOTS was first released. Perhaps the drivers are not working properly after the system refresh (since I had to reinstall them). I will check this.

Unfortunately, my current laptop does not have any slots for an external graphics card.

Thanks for your help! any other suggestions on what to try?

The main issue for onboard graphics isn't the chips they use, it's the fact that they have to compete and share system RAM, where as a video card has dedicated RAM for just graphics. Which is why I suggested a graphics card.
