What DirectX Class is my Card?

Post by Nspace » Tue Jul 25, 2006 9:28 pm

After reading Phil of Doom's problem, I began looking around for a listing of what DirectX class the various video cards are. Bossman has listed what is the minimum graphics card for SotS from each manufacturer's line below, so check that first. But I also found two comparison lists, one listing for NVIDIA and the other for ATI. These lists include what Cards are in the DirectX8 and DirectX9 classes as well as other information. If you don't see your card's manufacturer on Bossman's list, hopefully somebody here will be able to answer what class a specific card is.

I'm going to put down the minimum for a manufacturer's line. Post if you don't see your card's manufacturer or the card does not have a standard name.

Desktops:
ATI: Radeon 8500
nVidia: GeForce 3Ti, GeForce 4Ti (4MX does not have the needed shaders)
Intel: 945G chipset
Matrox: Parhelia series

Laptops:
ATI: Mobility M9, Mobility FireGL
nVidia: GeForce4 4200 Go
All offers void where prohibited, but especially in Quebec.

Does anyone know what the Intel 945 is running that the 915 doesn't have? I've a program that can sometimes fake-out a game and eliminate graphical funkiness, but I need to know what it's lacking so I know what to turn on. ;p (yes yes, terribly unsupported, no complaints if it crashes me computer, et cetera; it's a laptop, upgrading isn't too easy to do)

The 945G has a higher clock speed than the 915G, can use DDR2 memory (915 is restricted to DDR) and it supports vertex shader v3.0, while 915 uses v2.0. But neither uses hardware T&L, so I would expect a bit of chugging. The reason I put 945G was because I couldn't find data on the 915G earlier. If you get it working, let me know and I'll change the entry.

By the way, is the program you're talking about Intel's Graphics Media Accelerator 900?

Nah, thing called 3D-Analyze; fixed some problems I had with Pirates!. The game runs for me right now, I just have some weird graphical stuff (big flickering patches on the ships; can see the ships no problem, though). I'll wait and see if they wind up patching in a "kill shaders" option later, else I'll just deal with it. ;D

RADEON IGP 345M

Post by Rafale » Mon Aug 07, 2006 1:41 pm

what about a RADEON IGP 345M chipset for a VAIO PCG-FR315M Laptop?
it´s only got 64MB onboard RAM and it doesnt seem to like the "directshow" filter in DX9...

Im asking this because i get a CTD when i try to start the demo.
this is my sessionlog:

Warning: Movie: StretchRect failed (Invalid call)
Warning: Movie: BinkOpen: Error opening file.
Warning: DrawDevice::Present: D3DERR_DRIVERINTERNALERROR

and this is my other specs:
P4 2,66GHz
446MB RAM
RADEON IGP 345M w. 64MB
Win XP SP1
the latest videodrivers & DX9

i´m getting the impression my laptop may not be compatible with SotS anymore.
could anybody enlighten me please?

I think you're out of luck with the 345M and the demo. :(

and the full version?

Post by Rafale » Thu Aug 10, 2006 6:55 pm

jeez, don´t you developers (or your bosses) never think about downwards compatibility?
so, what about the full version?

Actually we do, and here is the jist of what we know:

The 345M drivers are not properly supported and notoriously buggy. D3DERR_DRIVERINTERNALERROR is the first indication that something is wrong. It is D3D reporting back directly saying that the drivers are speaking gibberish.

If you dig around the internet, you'll find that some 345 owners have hacked together their own drivers from bits and pieces of others. For example:

http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread. ... ge=1&pp=15

If you have patience you may be able to get this working, but otherwise the prognosis is not good for many new games.

This is odd, seeing as I have the same card, and it runs fine (albiet with the normal graphical glitches common with below-spec cards). Backwards compatability in games? Please. Games are designed with the latest tech in mind. The fact that SOTS supports such low-end systems is rare today, and the level of involvement of these developers is one of, if not the highest I have ever seen outside of freeware communities.

The OMEGA drivers are much better than ATI's normal ones. I reccomend installing the most up-to-date compatible OMEGA driver ASAP.

I've posted two links of Comparison Lists for ATI and NVIDIA in the first post. It won't help Matrox or Intel card users, but it might help somebody else. :)
