Satisfying curiosity.

Post by The Earl of Emsworth » Mon May 02, 2011 8:11 pm

Threadnomancy (forumomancy?) ahoy (please do not comment on it, I am fully aware of it), but just to satisfy my curiosity, in the very first demo was 'Armor' the only type of available cruiser, or was I just doing something badly wrong initially?

I don't recall cruisers being available at all initially, but yes there were lots of restrictions on what you could research, in lieu of a time/turn limit. IIRC a later demo reversed this, and SotS2 will follow the latter model for its demo.

Wasn't it that in the first demo you could only play with destroyers and Tarka+Humans and later demos instead let you play everything, but only for a limited number of turns?

I wouldn't recommend the former, it doesn't give a very good idea of the game. The DE age typically ends fairly early on, with them being relegated to mostly specialist work, while combat is done by cruisers and dreadnoughts.

To be fair, tech costs were balanced a little differently back then and the DD era lasted longer. It wasn't uncommon to get Fusion before cruisers and not unheard-of to get Antimatter first. ;)

It was the 1.1.1 version - does this (armor only) match up?

An updated demo was released on Oct. 16th 2006.

It included the 1.1.1 update and the ability to build and field a cruiser.

Fits well.

It's a far cry from the game it is now, though, so not very representative.
