Why are empire colors fixed?

Post by functional » Tue Oct 09, 2012 2:59 am

I sort of feel that it's restricting your imagination to have 8 colors to choose from. Is there a specific reason to this?

I was about to create a new game as a Hiver and I noticed that the ship looked AWESOME. Then I noticed that the empire color was black. The color that can't be obtained. Either I choose a color or it will choose a random color for me, but the ships again didn't look that cool anymore :(

Any chances of having a real color range like the ship color one?

It's been called out in the past when this has been brought up (multiple times) that the primary reason to enable you to clearly differentiate different empires from one another. The territory in tactical battles shows this color. The planets you've colonized and your fleet icons show this color. It needs to be able to different but limited in number of available colors due to this primary reason. For example what would stop people from picking almost the same color as another player just to confuse either them or the rest of the players in the game. As it stands now we get the best of both worlds:

1. We get clearly identifiable colors that we can associate with a specific player/faction in a game.
2. We also get a significantly more varied secondary color that we can pick from a palette instead of from pre-defined list of colors.

Without number 1, there would be unprecedented chaos and confusion ;)

We could have, instead, ships with our own colours (argh, why is colours classified as a typo, it's more beautiful word than colors) aaaand.... empires with the fixed ones. I sort of thought that this might have something to do with it. It would be pretty hard to identify who is who if there's 8 empires with a default white or black or different shades of blue.

I'm not 100% sure about how this works in tactical combat, though. The main menu video shows a battle with multiple empires, is that actually possible? (Probably yes...) In that case, you could outline the ships (for example, when you move your cursor to them) with the empire color.

The issue here in my opinion is that playing a pink Zuul (or anything for that matter) isn't exactly logical. "Load the women to the pink ships"? Come on.. :(

And not to mention, there are so many cool possibilities for great looking ships with proper colors. Given the amount of detail in this game, I would have imagined that you'd have less restricted access to painting your ships.

Yup - regularly happens when alliances are involved especially.

Either way the topic has been brought up and shot down numerous times in the past. We're basically beating a long-dead horse here. What we have today is possibly both the simplest and the most effective solution to the counter-points that have been brought up for why we have static 'empire' color choices. There are plenty of awesome looking color combos for all of the races especially when you mix in the immersion packs.

Fair enough. Though I still would hate to be the pink zuul. No way, I'll play Liir if I happen to get strictly pink.

I went through the exact same thing. The most obvious solution is to make the game randomly choose a color first on empire selection instead of starting with no color so that people like us never get to see how much better all the ships look in black.

For those who come in later and have questions about the above, this seems to be about SotS 2, not SotS 1. ;)

I think that boils down to, "Be grateful you can pick colors at all. Back in my day, if you picked the pink empire, you had to play as pink whether or not you liked pink. And I had to walk 40 miles in the snow to my friend's house to play the pink empire... and it was uphill both ways!"

I just did a multiplayer match, forgot to assign color and the result was

Pink Zuul.

The irony

Pair it with a lime green secondary color and call yourself The Rude Dawgs. I often choose to be pink as the Suul'ka Horde just for that reason. :)

Regarding colors: can we have something like match colors, so empire and ship colors would be the same?

I mean automatic, like I set empire color, press button and ship color is the same.
