Apollo Effects Editor

Post by castewar » Wed Aug 23, 2006 4:28 am

Hello! Modders take note - we always promised that once the game was out, we would work to make our tools, your tools. And so, to get the ball rolling, we're making our Apollo Effects Editor available.

No warranty expressed or implied, use it for good, not evil, keep it secret, keep it safe, etc. etc.

ENJOY!

Nuclear fire will consume you all!!!! Muah ha ha ha!!!!!

[E] If anyone else is like me, try doubling clicking the paremeters in the upper left window, as well as right clicking those main directory like thingies in the same window with the plus signs.

Checking out the existing effects is cool, it looks like there are effects I can use to base other effects on, so I don't have to work from scratch.

I also made my first effect from scratch, it looks like crap and I'm very happy with it. :D

Wow, this is nice, but I have one little question. Is there any way to adjust the position of the emitter? I only ask because I'm hoping to make a "helix" trail effect for if i ever manage to get the full game and can mod in my BPTs.

Look at the anti-matter engine files, they have two flast beams side by side, so that will give you an idea for spacing.

Ah, okay, they didn't actually change the position, but rather used a texture with a strip of transparency, that'll do for what I'm trying.

Hmm, you don't seem to have the appropriate smiley for how I feel about this release, so this will have to do:

Of course I now have to figure out how to use it.

for all we know there could be script elements not even utilized in any of the base game files...

All the more reason to have a game bible. All of the Escape Velocity games had huge mod bibles. Shouldn't something like that exist already, I would think everything like that would be documented as the game goes, for future reference of the game makers. The game Starships Unlimeted had an extremely complete tech guide, explaining the differences in weapon, defensive, and drive systems, since it had so many different ones, not for programing but for game play.

Well, in the meantime, it'd be great if you could add what you know to the wiki, Major. We do have a section dedicated to modding. ;)

There's this weird bug where if I open a custom effect in a file other than the complete effects folder, the effects apear as black rectangles with color in them, instead of the black being invisible. I'll get this in the complete folder too, sometimes. My abriviated folder, with just the effects I'm working, has all of the support files. Does anyone else get this problem?

To get around it, I open an effect in the complete folder, if it works correctly I then open one of my custome effects in the other folder.

Probably has something to do with textures not being found in the correct place or something.
