I want to invite a friend over to play SotS on my two computers. He owns the game on Steam, so he will be able to sign in and download the game on one of my computers while I use my (non-Steam) copy on my main computer.
However, before he comes over, I'd like to test setting up multiplayer on the two computers. Can I set up a multiplayer (network) game using using a my single license, or will I need to wait until he is over here and loads his own copy of the game?

You might get a "cd-key already in use" error (not sure if SotS1 retail version still has this kind of DRM or if it has been patched out). Why haven't you just tried it out?

I took your advice and just tried it. Sure enough, I got the CD key in use error, so you do need to copies of the game to play on your own network.
