Drive Tech

Post by Shiro » Fri Jun 12, 2009 6:22 pm

I hate to make a new thread about this, but I can't seem to find where to place this otherwise. Give my regards to the hate replies.

From what I've read, the Rockbug drive takes one turn to charge/prepare and one turn to jump through space. There has been ideas showing how to do this using node space, strings, and a Tarka/Hiver principal variant. I'm suggesting that they could do something similar to the Tarka (charge their ship then go), but in node space. Where they would charge/prepare their ships in real space (vulnerable to Liir/Tarka/STL intercept) then jump through node space where they're invulnerable. The advantage of this drive is that they can then intercept all other races (catch Human/Zull in-jump, catch everyone else by jumping out of node space at them)

It's just an idea to support their "hunter" psychology.

I don't think we should have another nodespace race, but I'm not prepared to reject the concept outright. What do you think of a researchable tech that lets them intercept units in nodespace? Would there be a downside? Perhaps this could be a random drive or C3 tech.

So, have their 'Horizon' drives use the node-space/real-space horizon to travel, but they have to research an engine tech to jump into node-space long enough to intercept node fleets.

If this is what you're saying I have no opposition to it, but I just felt this race is already impaired by their slow colonization. So I was suggesting the idea of intercepting all other races so they can stop or slow a fleet before they get to the rockbug's planets.
I though it might add a balance to their colonization speed and support their 'hunter' personality.

If nothing else, it adds a bit of uniqueness to their drives and gameplay.

I like the gameplay effect but I'm not sure if the benefit is needed or what the IC fluff might be. I don't think they're going to use nodespace to travel but I wonder if they need to in order to pop in for a courtesy call on invading fleets. :)

So remember the rubber band theory about how we keep bouncing off nodespace? ;)

Don't worry, Humans feel the same way about you, since they tend to lack multiple easy access points to your gate network.
