Spinal Mount

Post by Kakaze » Sat Jan 09, 2010 12:34 am

Forgive me if I posted this elsewhere, but I can't find the topic so here it is again. My spinal section, set up as a replacement for armors, which are generally over used IMO.
These would be slightly weaker armor wise, slower, but have 1L/2S, so a better gun layout. It seems more ambush predator to me. Here are the pics.

*EDIT* 307 tri

These look great, but why so low poly? Are they just meant as concepts? The stock sections are all about 2000-2500 tris per section.

Hmmm, I thought that was just the high poly versions. I thought each one had to have a low poly version around 300 tri's per face for DE's and others that were bigger for the zooms and such

I like the idea of especially hard-hitting spinal sections.

Consider swapping the two small turrets for three/four fixed smalls.

On that note, maybe the Strafe command could have a fixed medium mount and a pair of fixed smalls.

Technically, each section needs four levels of detail (at least, all the stock sections use 4), a base model at about 2000-2500 tris, and then cut about 500-700 faces off each LoD. Generally, you want to start with the high poly version, then trim from there, but I suppose working the other way could work. If that's what you're doing though, remember we already have a few sections (namely the std/armor/fission DE, and one other command section).

I'm starting at low poly because it gives us two very important things: quick working ships sections and visible concepts for any other (admittedly non existent) modelers/texturers to work on. Plus the amount of time it takes me to create one fits with my free time, so I feel like I'm accomplishing something new and big every day.
I see the pipeline like this: I crank out every LP over the next 2 months, get work in progress textures for them a month or so later, then go back and do the LODs at about 1 or 2 per week.
Who knows, if all the sections were in at low poly we could actually stick it in game. It would look like crap, but we would have SOMETHING after all these years and that is important to me.

Since the rockbugs are supposed to have crystalline ships, I actually like the idea of blocky ship designs. It will definitely make them look unique, as well as being easier on the ship designers.

The ships aren't necessarily crystalline. They may use large amounts of crystal, but that doesn't mean the ships were "grown", or that the models we end up with should be of lesser quality than the Kerb designs.

These are very low poly, but will look much much more complicated once I have displacement maps from high poly ship designs. The chunkyness will mostly go away, and anyways, these models will only be in game at long distances.

I thought of something really sick, what if they had 2 spinal mounts, pure evil!

No DE can possibly provide the power to operate the ship AND 2 large mounts when they're only about 10m long. In fact, don't all the races ONLY have one single large mount on their spinal sections? Why are the rockbugs any different?

Destroyers are actually 30m long. Not 10m.

Heya

If it's any consolation, it's still trying to fit two spinal mounts in a 10M Section... ;)
