Mod Project Team

Post by silvaril » Tue Jan 22, 2008 3:26 am

Heya

Table of Contents:
... Filename Standards
... Collaboration Resources
... Team Structure
... The Why

I have distinct thoughts on direction and will make that quite clear in further up-coming threads. *shrug* More debate as required then.

Filename Standards:

When saving models et al, please incorporate the filename that model will use in the GOB file into the filename.
To differentiate the most recent from any previous builds:
suffix the model name with date and build number formatted as YYYYMMDDBB

eg: CRFusion.shipsection.2008012403
Build number three for the 24th of January 2008.

(I have a unix background and like that format because it sorts nicely...)

Collaboration Resources:

FTP Server.
Please PM silvaril or Zabaron for access.

Google Groups.
Requires a Google Account.
Link on each page for requesting membership for editing.
http://groups.google.com/group/sotsmod
http://groups.google.com/group/sotsmodconcepts

The Wiki.
Yes, it's still the placeholder name...
http://sots.rorschach.net/Category:Mod_Matrixi

Google Docs.
Requires Google Account (?)
http://docs.google.com/

XFire.
Well, OK, any IRC client you wanna use, but hey, we have a chat room... :D

Mod Project Team, team structure:

CatchCharyou is the current Project Manager.
Based on my requirement that the person in the Project Lead position be interchangable in the case that said person is not "working out", there needs to be someone to do the hiring, firing and handle the complaints process as well as liase with KP.
CatchCharyou will remain that person.

I've volunteered for the role of Project Lead.
( Enough complaints for CatchCharyou to mull over and you will be able to get rid of me :D )

The rest of the project team structure outlined below is my idea with CatchCharyou's OK.

There are threads up regarding each Team for those who wish to volunteer their time.

I will be picking Team Leads, further details on the role in the Team threads.

Project Manager aka Forum Moderator aka CatchCharyou

>Project Lead aka silvaril

>> Design Team Lead
>>> Design Team Member 1
>>> Design Team Member 2
>>> Design Team Member 3

>> Model Team Lead
>>> Model Team Member 1
>>> Model Team Member 2
>>> Model Team Member 3

>> Texture Team Lead
>>> Texture Team Member 1
>>> Texture Team Member 2
>>> Texture Team Member 3

>> Gameplay Team Lead
>>> Gameplay Team Member 1
>>> Gameplay Team Member 2
>>> Gameplay Team Member 3

>> Story Team Lead
>>> Story Team Member 1
>>> Story Team Member 2
>>> Story Team Member 3

The Why:

CatchCharyou and I were discussing the progress on the Mod.

Notably the recent Where is everyone? thread.

I made several suggestions to CatchCharyou and then found myself in the position of put up or shut up. ;)
( Note that I put myself there, I was not placed there by someone else :roll: :lol: )

So after much further discussion, we've agreed to proceed based on the new structure outlined above.

I suppose I just want to add that other than remaining a forum moderator, and being a Sword of Damocles over Silvaril's head, I'm not going to be directly contributing to the direction of the mod itself. That's the Project Lead's prob- er, job now. :wink: It also leaves me neutral for conflict moderation. This arrangement should allow for the benevolent dictator needed to get the gears turning strongly again. Silvaril has the say on what goes, when, and how. He cracks the whip. But if he takes it too far, he'll get the pink slip from me. I don't think it'll come to that.

This should work out nicely. So, if you're willing and able, post up!

The only issue I see with that setup is that for the most part, people will tend to texture their own ships. Thus, splitting Modeling and Texturing into two separate teams is a bit odd. Perhaps a Modeling/Texturing team and a 2D Art team would be better.

*shrug* Folks ask these questions...

Post by silvaril » Thu Jan 24, 2008 3:15 am

Heya

I know it seems odd, especially with the existing finished models...

*sigh*

What I can't find under the final models directory on the FTP server:

Bare Metal Models, sans Textures, that can be used as a baseline reference for folks wanting to try out different textures and effects.

LODs

or indeed anything that can be placed in a GOB file for folks to test with.

Which is about what I was expecting to find. :oops:

The reason I have broken it down in this fashion is so that the goals are clearly defined.

I fully expect people to texture models as they go, just to highlight bits and see how they will look, not to mention distract from what might be an otherwise boring piece of work... ;)
There will be crossover from Design to Models to Textures and back again.

But:

The "required end product" of the Design Team is 2D and 3D art that can be looked at by the Story and Gameplay Teams for comment, as well as 3D models that give the Models Team a starting point.

The "required end product" of the Models Team is a bare-metal model and accompanying LODs that all work in-game.

The "required end product" of the Textures Team is *cough* "pretties".

I currently only have 3 finished models on the FTP (as that's all we have done) and no LoD models. I also have no textures (IIRC the only section that ever got textured was the DE Deep Scan). I just resorted the FTP directory structure to match the restructuring of the team, so there's actually nothing in the finished models folder anymore (I just renamed it to Misc.Models to avoid confusion). I've made a new folder, Completed Mod Files, to hold all the completed files. It's structured exactly like sots.gob so that once we finish all we should have to do is gob that folder and we'll have a working final product.

I've also sorted the directories out into the teams and give each member currently listed their own folder.

Heya

Thanks for that Zabaron :) Much appreciated.

I have also created the following Google Groups:

http://groups.google.com/group/sotsmod

http://groups.google.com/group/sotsmodconcepts

The downsides are a requirement for a Google Account, having to right-click+save-as the files and not being structured to go into a gob file.

The upsides are 100MB of disk space per group and being freely accessible by anyone clicking on the links.
Note, accessible does not mean being able to modify the files listed there, though folks can download them to play with.

CatchCharyou is the group Owner in both cases.
I am a group Manager in both cases.
( Which means I can be excluded by CatchCharyou at any time :) )

There is a link on each site to request membership, and thus editing access, to each group.

I went Google because it gives people an option to also utilise Google-Docs for collaborative Storyline work.
( That, or the Wiki ;) )

Right now, I want options for people to use. I'm not going to restrict tools, just outcomes :twisted:

For those who might need a google account... do you still need an invite to get in, or can anyone sign up nowadays? If the invite is still necessary, I have plenty to hand out. Just send me an email.

Speaking of size, I don't think I ever said how much space we have on the FTP. Anyway, its 500mb total.

Heya

Can I get folks together for a meeting in about a weeks time please.

Figure XFire or Google Chat, but those are my limitations... ;)

If folks can let me know in this thread what their schedules are like, it would be appreciated.

Thanks
