Design - Ship Section Principles

Post by silvaril » Wed Jan 23, 2008 11:52 pm

Heya

This post is intended to be used as a reference by the Design Team to follow when designing ship sections.
I sincerely doubt everything is covered here, so expect edits as the Design and Story Teams have their say.

Kerberos Productions wrote:One of the main design philosophies we follow is the amount of turrets per section is determined first, this is the main structure for the lay out of the section. From that you determine areas around the turrets for mounting brackets, ammo storage etc. After that you can make choices on areas more dedicated for crew and other facilities necessary for the sections functionality. This sets it up so theres not wasted areas of the ships. Creating a model and then adding weapons on top is a lil' hodge podge, its a good idea to consider every thing thats needed behind the Turret door.

The recommended min/max poly count for ships depends on the ships size. A couple 1–2K per section for Destroyers is a good rule of thumb...higher for the larger ships.

For creating the ships we generally start out with a standard, armor, fission, after that you model with the other 2 sections so you can be aware of the ships composition and balance.

I also recommend having all your turrets in the model file as well for proportion. Not going to know if that turret and barrel will clear for sure unless you actually have it supported there.

The more Hit Points a Section has, the less crystal should show through on the section.
This should not only scale across each ship size, but through the sizes as well such that DN class ships don't have much exposed crystal surface.
Story-wise, the metal is used to protect the more vulnerable crystal, both because the layered (composite) effect works better and because the metal is easier to replace.

The lower the Power Tech, the more crystal exposed.
Fission drive crystals should be more exposed than fusion, with antimatter drive crystals the least exposed.
Part of the advances in Engine Tech could also be alterations to the Crystal sheathing.
Story-wise, the more advanced Power techs produce the required power over less exposed crystal area, allowing for better armoring of the drive crystals.

Tri-flore Design
The baseline DE engine we have seen shows this off well. It can flow through into the other sections as the previously concepted Armor section shows.
I anticipate Cruiser designs utilising twin tri-flore interlocking across a horizontal parallel, while Dreadnought designs would utilise 3 tri-flore "basics" interlocking rotationally parallel.
How, even if, the expansion of the Tri-flore to larger ship sizes is done needs to be thought through by the Design Team.

Right this may be a bit crazy, but I was just thinking about the ships, if the basic core of the thing is crystal, then what is there to say stop the ship being classed as part of their race, if the crystal it made out of is the crystal they are made out of, in other words they grow their ships.

With the original ships they are just like a tame beast, but with AI it would be like something clicked and the ships is fully conscious.

Also that would explain why ships that are bigger and have more advanced sections would be covered more in metal, as they care about the ships, they see them as part of their race and will do anything to ensure there brothers are protected so as to ensure they can do their duty, also the amount of time put in to grow the ships is a reason why they are protective cause they would be children in their eyes that they have mutated to fight for them.

I came up with idea when I was thinking of what sots would be like with ground combat, with the image of the tarkans and zuul fighting it out the image you get when loading BOB. I just thought could you imagine them on the battlefield, I could see their kind putting armour on each other and mounting massive weapons on the truly big ones, to use as massive battle platforms. So with this thought it just dawned one me that if they would use their own kind as moving fighting platforms on the ground, would they bio engineer some of their kind to be ships.

What do you guys think?

As I said a crazy thought from someone who should have his insanity checked.

Didn't we firmly debunk the whole "living ships" thing and the whole "walking crystals" in favor of "filled with soft and gooey organic matter based on silicion instead of carbon" as far as the rockbugs themselfs?

hey I don't know I'm still thought the initial brief of what the rockbugs was the same unless the story team changed.

just poping in to say from what I remember we decided ships were manufactured.

The crystals would be grown in the way that we grow trees for wood - not living things, but still a more or less self-producing and veratile construction material albeit one that doesn't particularly excel in any area.

Ships that sing are more likely with this race?? :)

Heya

It has been debated, and the conclusion was to "engineer" the ships rather than have them as living beings.

Partly as living beings tend to grow, and we couldn't see a way to "promote" a Destroyer to Cruiser then Dreadnought...

Mostly because destroying the command section would equate to decapitating a living being, with ancillary effects that cannot be replicated within SotS.

So the ship components are likely "grown" to requirement, but the whole is constructed.

No, IIRC we decided that they are not just magically alive lumps of rock; that they have internal organs with functions similar to our own. We never went into what those organs are like. Many of them could very well be hard and crystalline as opposed to squishy.

Yes for the rockbugs themselves, but I don't recall anything of the sort for the ships...

Ah, I figured that's what Glacialis was talking about. And IIRC we were going with strictly inanimate ships.
