The queue of games

Post by Space Voyager » Tue Jun 23, 2009 11:19 am

I was just wondering what the order in which Kerberos is planning to release games is.

Is

Planet Zombie
NorthStar
SotS2

still the right queue? Any changes, newcomers?

I would think the correct que would be:

Northstar/Fort Zombie simultaneous release (it's NOT planet zombie!!)
Sword of the Stars Campaign Type Standalone game (Mecron mentioned this like 6 months ago)
SotS 2

Heya

Fort Zombie is parts of Northstar made into "Fun and Shooting Things!" the last I heard, so the correct order should be:

Fort Zombie
Everything Else...

As for what the Everything Else resolves to, the last I heard it was more:

Northstar
SotS Campaign
SotS-2

Which doesn't take into account anything else KP are working on they cannot tell us about yet, or weird requests such as ANY... ;)

Wait. Kerberos is making a campaign for SotS? An actual campaign with a story and everything? I can't believe I missed that memo.

I think they said they had ideas for making a campaign. It's not confirmed that they are going to do it, IIRC.
Zed's TARs (sample):
Fractious Allies -- Hiver vs. Hiver, with allies
Who Let The Bugs Out -- Hiver vs. Tarka and Zuul
Tarka Ascendant -- Tarka vs. Hiver and Zuul

 Honest mistake... I just wanted the game to be BIGGER. ;)

Mecron said that FZ was coming SOON (as far as I remember it was due before NS), but they changed the game engine a lot since than. For both games, naturally.

Anyway, FZ was supposed to be a game at a considerably lesser scale than NS and I guess after the game engine is finished it will come much sooner.

But I don't believe there will be a campaign made for SotS1. Actually it already has a kind of a campaign, so... I'd think they went on with other games. Wouldn't mind any additions to SotS1, naturally.

In the post, by mecron that I am refering to... about 6-9 months ago... Mecron stated that a stand-a-lone game SET in the SotS universe that tells the game's story in a campaign style way would be made between SotS 1 and SotS 2. It would be more about story telling then 4x. Sorta a sots RPG. Also, since FZ and Nstar use the same engine, etc... I'm pretty sure it will be a package/bundle release, and therefore simultaneous.

Just because they use the same engine does not have anything to do when they are released. I would agree that FZ would come first while they complete NS. It looks like FZ is a fun project that they put together while they were working on NS.

This makes me sad... it would be awesome sauce if you did have something like that set in the SotS universe between now and sots 2... ;)

i am still betting on another sots expansion. For christ sake look at all the multiplayer games going on these days..its like 4-5x anything before amoc..the new publisher will want more of the same for all the new players not something new and risky. If there is enough manpower for a 2nd front we might get something new like Northstar..but im guessing the market says more sots.

I don't think we'll see another expansion per se. Kerberos has already closed the door pretty firmly on the current chapter. We might see the campaign game Mec's alluded to as being something that could be done (not something that necessarily will be done) as a sort of SotS2 prequel. Or we might see SotS2 itself if the demographics say that is what will sell best.

That said, a significant amount of work has already gone into the Fort Zombie/Northstar line. Kerberos certainly sounds like they've been planning to do those next. And the amount of work that would need to be done to the SotS engine to bring it up to a 'new game' level (i.e. a full-on sequel rather than just another expansion) is probably non-trivial. Besides, I don't think Kerberos necessarily wants to restrict themselves to just one sub-genre of sci-fi. Too much of the same thing results in burnout eventually.

Either way, with Fort Zombie/Northstar scheduled next or with campaign game/SotS 2 scheduled next, I don't think we'll see much more for SotS1 other than a patch/update or two.

I agree with ZedF. And I sincerely hope that is what will happen. SotS1 is (IMO) FULL. It has so many things and is so freaking HUGE that more may not bring better. Changing existing things is different naturally and UI changes are not expansion should Kerberos decide to polish things even further.

I have more than enough in SotS1. MORE than enough. Prospects of new games definitely thrill me a lot more than a few more weapons or sections. I am not even able to use the ones that are in... And it will probably take me a year to try them all out. :(

Anyway, I don't think Kerberos would be prepared to be led into a dead end of adding more and more until it all becomes an utter mess, impossible to balance. Also the enthusiasm Mecron showed for his new projects make me believe that he WILL want those finished in a timeframe he thought of.
