Why can't I say it?

I came across this and thought it might be a good read for others here.

You don't have to do anything except living with the consequences.

Which is apparently something many celebrities are curiously unprepared to do.

It was particularly interesting to me that this guy's target audience is children of around 12 years old. So he's been shoving hateful, racist shit into the brains of millions of kids in the cause of "entertainment".

Hopefully he'll lose some advertisers. I'm not sure that everyone who tosses racial slurs around grasps this, but doing so raises the question of just how much they support the positions of the outspoken assholes who seem to think that it should be legal to hunt people of different skin tones or religious backgrounds for sport.

As long as it is done in the name of Teh Lulz, it's all good.

Keeping in mind that this is an imagined monologue as opposed to an actual post by the Youtuber, the things he says are indicative of his own internal attitude and feelings toward other people, whatever emotional state he happens to be in when he says them.

I hadn't before you mentioned it, and it's definitely worth taking more seriously than the first article you linked. While linking a mockumentary piece may be cathartic, leading with real journalism is probably better for getting the point across.

Well it was pretty much the first thing on the page and it mentions the streamer by name. Sorry...I thought there was enough to link the two together.

Yeah Slashman, like ZedF, I missed the link to the Guardian. I had already seen news articles about this guy, so I thought you were just calling attention to something that was a satirical piece that you liked.

Another thought (though more for the article's author than Slashman):

One needs to contextualize a topic (e.g. with discussion) before launching into satire, or one risks it being interpreted as bullying rather than humor. I read a couple sentences into the article and dismissed it immediately. If I had been more explicitly pointed to the news article first, I might have been in a more receptive frame of mind to appreciate the mockumentary.

I've seen this article discussed in a couple places and most people seemed to get the gist.

I mean...the first sentence in italics after the title. Containing the name of the person that's being satirized and a link to an article with more info.

I don't watch game streaming and I know who Pewdiepie is. Not to mention spelling out your own joke word for word is a bit lame.

How much would it have cost, though, to put in a sentence saying, "if you don't know who PewDiePie is or why he's bad news, read this first"? Everyone has an opinion, especially on the internet. There isn't enough time to wade through them all. If someone wants me to care enough about theirs to read an article about it, and it's not on a topic I'm already predisposed to read, then putting a little effort into convincing me it's worth my time might be a good idea. A name and an implicit embedded link -- which obviously failed to catch my attention initially -- and no description of why I should believe the author is doing anything other than standing on a soapbox, doesn't mean much.

Agreed. Catharsis may provide gratification, but there is no wisdom in it.

I've been seeing more and more "imagined monologues" or "what they should've said/wrote responses" online to various news stories. They all literally read like some kind of weird fan-fiction of reality where the writer inserts themselves into the story.

For me, its just a huge distraction and detracts from whatever contribution they were attempting. I rarely bother to read them at all anymore.

I think the mockumentary piece is both appropriate and necessary.
