Tracking Photonic Torpedo
Tracking Photonic Torpedo
Greetings all,
this new tech in the title had me wondering what the advantages of it are.
So far the only advantage seems to be that even if you don't get fusion torpedoes, you still have something that tracks.
The range is the same and the damage is less (although they fire more shots at once).
Has anybody figured out a use for these weapons? Is their range actually longer than fusion torpedoes, despite the stats?

Re: Tracking Photonic Torpedo
Long range weapon which tracks and can not be shot down by PD fire. Also fires quite fast, when compared to tracking torpedos.
I use it on my DNs and LVs if I know I'm going to be facing a PD heavy fleet but still want something with good range and damage.

Thanks!
Any idea whether the range is longer than a fusion torpedo, in practice?

The Design screen tells you that.

It has slightly less range, but not by much.

Re: Tracking Photonic Torpedo
I thought it was a lot less range initially, but in the weapons test the ranges seem comparable. I did try to figure out the graph before asking here.
Photon torpedoes can sometimes overshoot their target and go on for a little while, I was wondering if the same goes for the tracking variety.
Unfortunately, in the weapons test, the tracking photons (on a platform) can't actually hit the (stationary, brightly coloured) targets. I'm assuming that short range fire is out of the question then.

Re: Tracking Photonic Torpedo
dont forget that fusion and am torpedos reach full strengh only after flying some range, and will loose damage when damaged.
photonic torpedos are much harder to counter.

Darn I was hoping there would also be tracking versions of the higher-tech direct-fire torps. It seems like a very nice weapon for it's era, but the damage will start to look very weak as higher-tech weapons become available.

This would be nice, although they might be a tad bit overpowered in this case. We can probably wait to see if they are released in the next xpack.

What are your experiences with Tracking Photonic Torpedo accuracy on platforms?

Same as will all platform torpedoes:
Pointless sicne the range is too small for proper cross firing.
Stick to defense boats, suicide drones, and heavy missile spam.
Those can at the very least overlap and increase the volume of fire. Torpedoes just... don't.

Re: Tracking Photonic Torpedo
Have to agree there. I'm yet to see any true use for the Torpedo sat, especially since we now have the Heavy Missile Satellite.
Still prefer Asteroid Monitors and\or BR sats though.

Re: Tracking Photonic Torpedo
I think Torpedo sats really shine in defending choke points. I usually deploy them in a ring around the area where the enemy will spawn or where I will make my stand. Each sat contributes up to eight torps and four PD guns, which can be significant. Also torps are not affected by mecha empathy.

Yes, they can kill themselfs. Yaaaaay.
Re: Tracking Photonic Torpedo
I will definitely use torp sats on 'the front line' where their heavy alpha firepower can put that big dent in an opfor. Missile sats then work well in the next sectors over where you can get a couple of extra missiles added into the mix. BR sats are 'expensive' CP wise for small system use, but provide the mobile firepower you want to then get even more oomph into a contested area, and to chase down any blockade runners.

Thats the way i do it! Torps just make my day, especially while defending! 2-3 Torp sats in good placement and with PD fry a cruiser usually.
Later with DN´s and LV´s appearing, Sats get more and more useless...
