Ballistic VS laser weapons

Post by Thrake » Tue Jul 16, 2013 5:06 pm

Laser, or wathever you call it in English (first tech tree that appears when you browse the techs). From stats, ballistic looks obviously better to me. Though, for balance reason, there must be something good in lasers. So, why would I want to have some?

1st their very accurate compared to ballistics. 2nd they have some subtle secondary effects like resetting firing rates/turrets which can slow the enemy down. 3rd their a lot less supply dependent then missiles and guns. Conversly they're energy hungry and if energy is low can slow firing rates. I'm sure their are other factors to consider.

Personally, I prefer combined arms making it difficult for the enemy to counter either by fleets composed of differing specialist ships or ships with varying weapons on each.

different factions have differing proclivities. li'ir are very strong energy, and hiver are strong ballistics (2 most extreme I think)

and like was said, there are additional effects, crits, resets, accuracy. also, ballistics has a tendency to toss the enemy which makes other shots in salvo miss horribly.

but, in a lot of ways, there are no weapons in ballistic (not counting unsanctioned weaponry....) that the energy tree doesnt have a similar one. also, you cant equip rail guns to planets...

most energy weapons also have a stronger damage profile than ballistics or missiles. also, more ballisitcs/missile = less endurance. but cheaper ships.

Armor is effected differently with each as well. Laser weapons are affected by reflective type armor and ballistics is affected by the other type of armor.

I see, thanks. This suggests that, among other uses, energy is the best option against small ennemies (missiles, drones,...) where accuracy is the key.

Not quite. Laser PD have a shorter range then the mass driver PD so missiles can get closer and they don't hit nearly as hard. Plus the mass driver PD can impart a vector change to the missiles and drones so that while it may not be destroyed it may mess up the attack pattern of the drones and missiles. Plus I think you can give drones reflective armor rendering the laser PD useless or weakening the higher versions. In SotS there is not true ultimate weapon for anything.

- Laser PD has a longer range than Phalanx PD.
- Laser PD doesn't have the "Laser" Attribute therefore shouldn't be affected by reflective coating (while Phalanx PD has the "Ballistic" Attribute therefore should be deflected more by the higher levels of armor?)

Oops. Looks like I got the range issue wrong.
The other sounds like a bug issue. Its a laser PD. It should be affected.

The basic argument behind the reason why lasers do less damage at much less range, generate much more heat and 'lase' damage delivery is that ballistics weigh more and require ammo.

How do you figure they're imbalanced and what specific weapons are you referring to in which scenarios?

Since the reply was vague and the topic was last talking about differences in PD, I'm assuming you're talking about the differences between Gauss and Laser PD weapons?

In my experience Laser PD is superior to Gauss Pd against missile targets, Gauss PD is better against Tracking Torps and Boarding Pods (quick generalization in my experience in MP). They're both about equally effective against BR and Drone targets. Where Laser PD is superior is it allows for better logistics for your ships as they cost less supply. This can add up pretty quick and can be the difference between being able to reach a remote system (to attack) or not, as bringing along all combat ships is always preferable to removing a combat ship for a supply ship.

Don't forget damage patterns or accuracy. Basic ballistics are terrible at penetrating armor and can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Also, X-Ray lasers actually have more range than any small ballistics.

IIRC sniper cannons out-range x-ray lasers. This is supported by the wiki.

Right, forgot about those. Though i can't remember ever finding an effective use for them.

Anything they can hit tends to be to heavily armored for the impact to be noticeable, and anything they can damage is usually to fast for them to track.

If you try to brawl with sniper cannons you will have a bad day.
But the star on it and pick the long range stance.

Sniper cannons will shred ships without magnoceramic armor or higher. Should not underestimate them (I find them far more effective than XRay lasers though obviously countered by a different tech option). They're high ROF (only slightly slower than XRay lasers when you have VRF also) and pinpoint accurate, longer range, and higher damage all throughout the range levels compared to XRay lasers.
