Independent Races

Post by Erinys » Mon Jun 27, 2011 12:20 am

Independent Races are species which occupy a single planet or solar system and have not developed their own Faster-than-Light drive system. They can be incorporated into a larger empire as Colonies or Protectorates and can even make important contributions to the empire, but they cannot venture away from a single home system unaided.

Typically Independent Races are hidden away on obscure planets and cannot be detected without a careful Survey of a system. Finding them is a rare and special occurrence, and many of them have interesting secrets and abilities which are only revealed when they have been studied for some time.

As you encounter the Independents and learn more about them, this thread will allow you to comment or ask questions about them.

Good. Can't wait to meet (and conquer) them! Or is that trade with them?

:D

Seems like a good place to leave this:

Not the friendliest sounding name, but perhaps they have something valuable to trade you. Goods or... services.
Nerts to this space-crap!

You could say they have a stranglehold in their particular niche.

I am immensely curious what these races might be able to contribute to an empire. Like, for example, if the Tarka were to incorporate a psionically powerful independent race would it improve their odds of finding new psionic technologies.

Hmmm... since the strangler artwork has been released... is this an independant race? Is there any back story you can discuss at this time?

Does Specters count as an independent race?

Reading the SotS Prime race forums I got the impression their appearance is becoming more common due to node travel disrupting their...habitat. I wonder if the new psionic techs would allow the races to communicate with them.

"Does Specters count as an independent race?"

Well since they fail both of the defining characteristics Erinys stated - "species which occupy a single planet or solar system and have not developed their own Faster-than-Light drive system" - I would guess not.

The psionic communication question is a pretty neat one though.

Will the independent races have sotspedia filled with fluff? Will there be a back story for each race? I'm hooked to the fluff of the game, would be cool if by steadily improving relations with each race more of the fluff and knowladge of each race will be reveled.

you would porbably get more of it if you didn't use the term "fluff" so often...most writers HATE that term for the stuff they spend countless hours doing.

Would you rather have us referring to fiction creation progress as official fiction? :bangdesk:

Never mind pretending that fiction creation do not have a writer to create it in the first place!

whatever way you think you are being funny, which I do not have time to try and figure out...cause its not really funny...you may want to just stick with the simple "backstory"
