SotS2 and XP/DX9 machines

Post by castewarkp » Tue Nov 01, 2011 9:14 pm

We've been fielding crash reports from some people where it turns out they're running SotS2 on an XP system, or without a DX10 compliant card.

A reminder that SotS2 is reliant on DX10, and thus you can't run it on an XP machine, and even on Vista and up, if you have a DX9 card, you'll see a lot of strange things. These are not bugs and we cannot help with them.

On a related note, a few people have been posting steps for a workaround, which is enthusiastic and cool, but it also means I have to be the mean guy that says, we cannot provide technical support for copies of the game running outside the specs set for it. I wish we could, but do to so takes more resources than issues on a spec system, and we need those resources working on the spec system. So please, if you do decide to fiddle around, we will not be able to help if you run into trouble.

Thanks all.

I have DX 11 on Vista 32 bits. Is this good? Or do I have to downgrade to DX10?
I have a nVidia GeForce 9600M GT (specs state that it supports DX10 and shader 4.0).
Am I set? I have several CTD (some predictable) and freezes.
Thanks.

You are good, no need to downgrade. :) DX 11 seems to be backward compatible to DX 10, much like DX 9 is backward compatible to DX 8.

Everyone seems to be going the DX10/11 way these days, I really can't see the benefits as yet.

All I see is that DX10 is slower on my rig (Win7, ATi 3870 512Mb). :)

Anyway... how can I tell if SotS 2 actually runs with DX10?
I usually see strange artifacts / 'low quality' effects and sudden slow downs.

Normally this question should not arise, but I'm curious since it seems that it can run - for some extent - on DX9 machines too.

Most benefits are for developers. DX10 got rid of some legacy stuff and made it easier to make other stuff easier to program.

On the topic of DX10, will Refraction fallback textures (So far only the Liir have them) ever been finished? So we can turn off Refraction without causing an even bigger eyesore then it is with it on. (Ugh black textures of annoyance) :?
