Accessing images in the assets folder

Post by jiggyjiggy » Fri Jul 20, 2018 6:45 pm

I opened the assets folder and attempted to view the images stored within them. Most of the images had a tilde (~) at the end of their extensions.

.TGA~ and .BMP~ for example. And I was unable to open them with the appropriate image viewer like GIMP.

How might I view these images?

Doesn’t the tilde mean it’s a recovery file? Are you sure you are looking at the originals?

sorry, I'm a tech noob, what do you mean by recovery file?

I believe so, because I'm looking at files within the SotS 2 root folder.

if you have a copy of SotS 2, you might wanna navigate to the ...assets\base\factions\human\avatars folder and take a look at the .TGA~ files inside.

If those are recovery files of the originals, I have no idea where the originals are.

I've done some tests, swapping files and changing the filenames to match. The changes show up in-game as expected, proving that those are original files.

Then if you're still unable to view them my only idea is to make a copy without the tilde and see if your image viewer will recognize them then.

Why is this in the tech support area? This is a modding question.

Like many things in SOTS2, a ~ at the end of the filetype means the file has been protected and needs certain tools to access. Its called Asset Pipeline Protection, or something along those lines.

For images, Willdieh's Texture File Extractor should do the job for most of those.

Jiggy,
You seemed so determined to get access to the game images that I've re-compiled my image utility in 32 bit just for you :)
The new version is available here:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=57842

Keep in mind that it's going to be converting things to Direct Draw Surface files (DDS) and not directly to whatever user-friendly image file format you may be familiar with (PNG, JPG, etc). DDS files are common for storing game textures and contain something called MIP Maps (lower resolution versions of the main image for when the 3D object is zoomed out) so you'll need to use something like GIMP to convert them (links for related conversion utilites are found in the URL above).

Good luck! Let us know what you are able to accomplish!
William
