Is it perhaps because it's not installed in the steam folder? Did you buy it on steam?

Yes there seems to have been a change in where the game is stored. Have you swapped hard drives or copied over game directories lately?

Well, assuming you're still getting the same log entries and error messages, the game is obviously unhappy with your choice of installation location. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the game is hard coded to expect an installation into the steamapps folder. I know at least the subdirectories under the installation root are hardcoded. Since steam installations of games are pre-defined, assuming you're using steam to install the game, the only advice I can give you is check your file/folder permissions to make sure the steam directory is user read/writeable, make sure you don't have some anti-virus blocking access, and maybe check your registry to see if you somehow have a bad installation location defined there.

No I can't show you how... you should be able to just remove it like any other steam game by selecting "remove" from its entry in your library of installed games (or something like that).

I'm just another helpful player. I don't work for Kerberos/Paradox and unfortunately this game is probably not going to get much support beyond some basic troubleshooting due to its age. It's a steam game so the basic steam game troubleshooting should apply, which you can find on the steam support forums.

If it were me, I'd try it on another PC. That would tell you if it's something unique to the computer you're working on.
Sorry!

So were do I do that?
Run Steam. Click on Library.
On the list to the left, right click on Sword of the Stars 2: Enhanced Edition and left click on Properties on the list which just appeared.
Click on the tab Local Files, Click Browse Local Files. Go back to steam once the window opens and now click Uninstall Game.
Once the process is done, vaporize (delete) anything that remains in the Sword of the Stars 2 folder using the window that was opened before.

Once that is done, reinstall it to somewhere which is not Program Files. To do that, click on Steam in the top left and click on Settings.
If you don't have a Settings option, disable Family Sharing Mode.
Select Downloads then click on the top option called Steam Library Folders.
Click Add Library Folder in the bottom left and pick somewhere which isn't within a protected folder. So don't use anything with the User folder, My Documents\Documents or Program Files and especially not the windows folder. You can use the drive itself if you want since it makes a new folder called SteamLibrary to place all of your games and workshop content that's installed to that drive.

For clarity sake, my install location is C:\SteamLibrary and within that, Steam itself creates a SteamApps folder which contains the games you place there.

Once that's done, install Sword of the Stars 2 to your new folder.

Other things you may wish to check -
Your Antivirus may be messing up the installation. This is solved by using a different installation folder away from protected areas or by using a different AV program.
Hard drive space. SOTS2 uses a tiny amount of extra HD space when it runs, so if you're running with less than a GB of spare space on the HD it won't work.
Run SOTS2 as an administrator if you've got the account permissions to do such.
Sword of the Stars 2 : Project Hiver Modder
Creator of the Work-In-Progress Seimei Visual Novel series.
My dream game: Combination of Sword of the Stars 2, Angels Fall First, Conquest: Frontier Wars and Warzone 2100.
