Abit of SotS fanart!

Post by DarkMecha » Thu Apr 01, 2010 12:26 pm

Hello everyone, I'm not sure this is the right place to post this, but it seemed the best fit.

I'm a huge fan of the game, and especially the human ship designs. Being I'm also an artist myself, I wanted to show my love of this awesome game Kerberos has put together for all of us to enjoy. It really is something special.

Thank you for this amazingly detailed game, and I hope you enjoy the fanart!

It's at 1680x1050, and makes a great wallpaper too!

*Edit: Attachment restored for the enjoyment of all.

That's pretty cool! What'd you put that together with?
The teacher cut in smoothly, "Yes, of course. SolForce never fails to remind us how necessary they are to our...'survival'. ... It amazes me that the human race ever managed to exist, before you lot came along."

Cai Rui smiled thinly. "What amazes me is how quickly the human race could cease to exist, if we were gone."

I built the scene in 3d max. It's all high poly stuff, as I thought it would be cool to see what a sots ship would look like that way. The textures are just simple materials with raytrace and stuff, as frankly I just didn't want to spend a billion years tincturing them game-style. It works out well for the distances involved in the scene though, I think.

I'm not super happy with the lasers there, but I've not done much in the way of FX. The best I came up with was extruding a thin cylinder from inside the barrel of the gun, setting the material to self illuminated 'laser green', then using video post to give it a lens effect glow. It looks -ok- IMO, but it's just abit pixelated. I may go back and try to improve on that later.

I like it... looks good. Have you tried making the ships look a little dirty or used? "Pre-loved" type thing?

Very nice! Not everyone appreciates the beauty of Human ships. :)

Ok, I just couldn't let the lasers sit like that, so here is the improved lazorz version - much better I think.

It's a very noticeable improvement ;)

Could you reupload the pictures? I assume they were attachments that got knocked down the other day, and I was unfortunate enough to not check this thread until today. I was actually looking for some SotS-themed wallpapers to use, and the few on the wiki didn't exactly satiate my desire.

Sure thing, I'm glad I checked back here. I didn't know the links had died or whatever happened to them. *suckedintonodespace*

I'll reupload it as an attachment to the OP later tonight, but for now here is a direct link to it on my deviant art page:

Oh absolutely, go ahead! It would be my honor to have it on the wiki, thank you!

Also I restored the attachment in the original post. Glad to see people are liking it, I had fun making it.
