Okay here goes.

Playing Sword of the Stars and reading some of the fan fiction has encouraged me to write my own piece.

The only liberty I have taken with the SOTS universe, it may be a potential big one, is the FTL velocities.

I'd welcome your feedback. If it's too long - or too much in one chunk - I do apologise.

Edit: asked for feedback, which I forgot to do!

The off-white glow of hundreds of thousands of lights illuminated the dark side of the planet below. From the porthole to the side of the ready room, Captain William Hamilton found himself holding his breath in admiration of the view. One of the continents had been set aside for recreation purposes owing to the mountainous terrain and the fourth would be colonised in due course.

It was time. With a deep breath, the Captain left his ready room into the corridor then to the bridge.

“Mister Hain, take us out.â€

The officers assembled in the Captain’s ready room. SFS Exeter 774’s full compliment consisted of four officers and twenty six rated crewmen. All of the officers had served with Captain Hamilton and SFS Exeter 774 for at least two years. Round this table the Captain encouraged the officers to freely discuss their mission, possible strategies and known threats.

A small cough bought the meeting to order. “Tell me officers, what do you make of this?â€

Dimly, only dimly, the lights returned.

Captain Hamilton picked himself off the deck. At least life support had maintained the magnograv, the artificial gravity system, he considered. Shakily he tried to pull himself to his feet but a sharp stabbing pain from his leg stopped him. He looked down, a shard of metal was jutting out from his shin. A red mist was already forming.

Half of the bridge armour plating was missing along with the main canopy glass. Where there should have been a row of electronic consoles and the Navigation post, part of the Gauss Cannon ammunition reloader machinery had collapsed.

The only thing between the bridge and the raw vacuum of space was the inner plasglass structure, used for projecting sensor readings and information for the crew.

And certainly not designed for containing the ship’s atmosphere.

“Sir!â€

Interesting piece, and very nicely written. It could end here or continue very easily. Many thanks for posting! :)

An interesting story, surprisingly well written, given that you aren't a professional.

Thank you very much for posting it.

Thank you.

Thanks to Charlie, my proof reader. I kinda feel great that you liked it.

I originally envisaged three short stories, parts two and parts three picking up where part one ends.

Would it be possible to post this up in the Wiki..?

I believe there is a fan fiction section in the Wiki.

Hmm. I've created an account, but from this point forwards I don't know where to go. If I edit that page it doesn't allow me to add a sub category.

:)

Subcategories are added to articles et al, hence you'll find a couple of references at the top of that page when editting it... :D

Oooooh. Done, thank you. Once the subcategories were set up I was able to add the piece.
