[Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies

[Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
When running the game for the first time on a system without the .NET Framework 4.0 installed the second dependency (XNA Framework 4.0) may fail to install. To correct this issue simply restart your system and then try launching the game again and the XNA Framework will install successfully and the game will launch. This is due to an error where Steam will not prompt you to restart after the installation of the .NET Framework.
TLDR - Restart your system if the game fails to launch.

Thanks for the post about this Makail.
But you might also post it in the Steam forum as well.

Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
Any idea why even with the dependencies installed, Steam continually tries to re-install them when I launch the game?
Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
That's something weird in your windows setup. I get the same thing but only on my oldest machine. Haven't been able to track down what old odd or end is making it think it needs to reinstall. I suspect I need to clean out some skeletons
Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
I uninstalled both Net 4.0 & XNA 4.0, reinstalled both.
I also renamed the .CommonDist folder. At the moment, game runs without the reinstall each time.

Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
Excellent! Thanks for the info!
Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
Quick update.
I have confirmed that if I change the folder which holds the dependency installers back to the correct name, I get back the behavior where the game insists on installing the dependencies each time it launches. So, I've left the folder named incorrectly.
Odd behavior. But to be honest, it's not the first time I've seen a Steam game exhibit this issue.

Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
Possibly worth noting... I had the same issue where after installing the game on steam, it kept reinstalling it whenever I started it.
Steam ceased to do this, however, upon simply shutting down steam, and starting it back up again.
Not sure if this information is helpful, but I figured every bit of info helps.

Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
Usually steam will try to instal dependencies until it lanches the game successfully. Now ifthe game ends up crashing or suffering any problem that will make it terminate in any unusual fashion, steam will consider the game not to have lanched successfully yet and try to install the dependencies again. First step when lanching a steam game should be, if it loaded correctly, exit the game. After that steam will consider it a successful lanch and will not try to re-install dependencies.

Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
Renaming the _CommonRedist folder worked for me. It stopped msiexec (whatever that is
) from constantly installing. Thank you!

Renaming that folder to what?
Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
Heya
Anything that isn't that specific name usually
I would suggest _CommonRedist.old but only because I'm retentive like that

Re: [Steam] Possible issue installing dependencies
hmmm, I'm having similar problems on my Win7 laptop (though it installed just fine on my desktop, it's an infuriatingly good game - I have yet to get past floor 12
).
Note that I don't have a problem with the redists continually reinstalling, the game itself won't start.
I've rebooted.
I've restarted Steam.
I've uninstalled / reinstalled / deleted local content etc.
Renaming the re-dist directory did nothing.
I can't find .NET 4 related programmes to uninstall in "Uninstall or Change a program" in Control Panel.
When I try to copy the .NET 4 xna (downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=20914) into the steamapps/common/The Pit/CommonRedist dir and install it from there (or anywhere else for that matter), it complains that "Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 4.0 requires at least Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile).
When I try and install that I get the following error:-

Whilst the 005c3e56 etc dir is there, the dd_SetupUtility.txt file is not.
It is a crappy old laptop, and definitely needs to be wiped, but I can play on my main PC so am not that bothered. I thought this might be of interest if other people are having a similar problem and are capable of investigating further than I can
.

Just a note, the XNA related stuff would not include the full .Net package, so make sure that is installed first. Microsoft redistributables are pretty consistent with that. If it's complaining that it can't find .Net 4 and you don't see the ability to uninstall then there's a good chance you don't have it installed.
