Why is it called Redaction?

Post by Polaris » Fri Jul 26, 2013 1:05 am

I was wondering why the Psionic abilities for healing were given the label of 'Redaction'? Is there some lore explanation behind this? I looked up a few dictionaries and the usage of the word in this game is completely unrelated to the normal meaning of the word, which is editing text for publication.

Here are a few examples:
https://www.google.com/search?q=define+redaction
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/redaction
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/redact
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/redaction
http://oxforddictionaries.com/us/defini ... /redaction

I wasn't even able to find an obscure meaning of the word that was not related to publication (specifically of text or legal documents). I get that psionics don't exist in the real world so no dictionary is going to say Redaction is something to do with psionics, however, the relationship between the word's normal meaning and it's usage in the game seems to be non-existant. It might as well have been called "Toothpaste" or "Microsoft" for all the relation it has to any of these words. Unless there's some sort of lore explanation...

Read a SF book or two instead of googling. Was going to be nicer but the snotty part about calling it Microsoft annoyed me :P

I'd assumed it was called that because you're editing out anomalies your body has suffered, and it made sense to me as a writer. It was a reference to something else?

Julian May is the premiere science fiction of the late 20th century, where notions of psionic ability are concerned. Highly recommend all of her books, but particularly the Pliocene Saga and Galactic Milieu. She had a strong influence on the SotSverse, and many of the terms we use are hers, because she was the first to articulate and explain certain ideas. She did for psionics what Asimov did for robots. ;)

Belatedly, I recognized the terms and was happy to see them. :)

A local used book store has been visited and future reading material acquired, thanks. 8)
