Psionics as depicted in the SoTSverse

Post by Arbuda Sapiens » Sun Jul 13, 2014 7:47 am

I'm curious to know a bit more about how Psionics is handled in general in the SoTSverse. From what I can see in its current stage of development, most psionics must rely on brute force methods to cause damage to other targets instead of being able to just explode their hearts or damage vital organs (that is to say, using a tk fist in combat) because most psions don't have the skills it takes for such fine manipulation. Now from what I can see long term practice and native talent might subvert this example, for instance I'm sure the Suul'Ka are probably able to use their psionics with literally surgical precision if need be.

Also, unless psionics in general hasn't been fully refined in its development, the available psionic powers are definitely not, of course, representative of all the things an established psion can do with their minds, which is to say nothing of the psionic potential as developed in a powerful creature like the Bloodweaver (who enslaved all of Arbuda's native pop., forced them to build the Pit and possibly other such structures, and then slew them all save for the samples he keeps alive for his own purposes/testing.) Any info the staff can give to shed light on an expansion of psionic powers and potential in general will be appreciated. :pit:

The psionic powers used draw a lot of influence from the works of Julian May (the Pliocene Exile, Galactic Milieu series of books). It's safe to say the powers exposed in the pit are a gameplay simplification of what a psionic user would be capable of in the sotsverse.

The Liir in general are far more capable than such crude uses, employing it for just about anything from saying good night to their children over hunting to microsurgery and starship propulsion.

Using psionics while experiencing strong emotion such as fear or rage tends to result in less subtlety. ;)

Psi powers as used in the Pit are balanced for gameplay purposes, but thematically they give a fairly accurate sense of what psionics can do in a desperate combat situation (like being trapped in an alien death-maze). The different disciplines have applications beyond fighting, naturally.

The liir do indeed use psionics in a wide variety of ways - and in fact they can explode your heart, if they can focus properly.

The morrigi have developed a few interesting uses as well - they're best known for their psionic glamour, but they also have psions who can divine distant events and even foretell future ones.
