System Defense Vessels

Post by brisub » Mon Aug 06, 2012 6:09 pm

Hi, all! After reading lots of TAR's, I generally build packs of six DE's to defend colonies against Randoms. Typically, I use Armor/HH and a spread of weapons. However, I've been toying with other options and would like to see what people think:

  • Option 1 - Pursuit Section with Strafe (to rapidly close the enemy and bring firepower to bear
  • Option 2 - Torpedo Section with Strafe (to make the Pointy Nose more Pointy)
Other ideas are always welcome. Later in the game, I add a CNC DE and a Deep Scan capable vessel to the pack, but that depends. I only do it when I fear cloaked assaults, essentially. Otherwise, I build a CNC and extra escorts when I detect incoming.

  • Option 3 - do not defend your colonies (specifically) against randoms
Only defend your HomeWorld (unless Zuul) because of the extra Infra and Pop you can't replace. And of course the planets that are close to enemies.
If you're actively scouting the map and pushing forward, you should have so many fights, that (non-swarm) randoms will rarely show up, and so many planets, that the occasional loss of one of them will not be really painful.
This varies of course a bit with the different races, and a lot with the random slider setting.

I usually build a pair of destroyers per world in order to deal with VNs by either killing probes, running away from them, or getting eaten by them. Otherwise I tend to rely on aggression (scout battles, colony raids, and the like) to get enough battles that randoms other than map randoms don't show up.
Zed's TARs (sample):
Fractious Allies -- Hiver vs. Hiver, with allies
Who Let The Bugs Out -- Hiver vs. Tarka and Zuul
Tarka Ascendant -- Tarka vs. Hiver and Zuul

I use a group of six nominally, as this lets me kill asteroid packs. However, I was curious about what flavor people (those that build def fleets) are using. Strafe/Torpedo was very effective for me as the Tarka [VN's went POP with the torp barrage], although Pursuit sections are intriguing.

Something reasonably fast but cheap to produce. I tend to go with HH/Armour for VN defense so I don't have to replace the ships after the encounter as they can always run away from the VNs.

Asteroid encounter scales with the number of ships present, so it doesn't really matter how many you have when that encounter happens. You just want something fast with reasonable firepower. Again, armour works well here.

I'm really liking:

  • Human/Liir - Armor DE with HH command section
  • Hiver/Tarka - Armor DE with Stafe command section
Later in the game, as the Tarkas, I went with Torpedo DE with Strafe. VN's popped like popcorn. Their phaser PD (that's what I thin they use) had no answer for multiple incoming and, since they fly straight, the weapons had no trouble aquiring and destroying.

Seems that the good tactical speed of the Hiver DE's makes Strafe a good choice for Hivers.

I haven't played Morrigi or Zuul yet.

I don't know, IMHO Hivers are already behaving like flying bricks, and I'm not sure the loss of maneuverability is worth the 2 extra light mounts (especially since they already have more guns than other races on the other sections...)

I don't know, either; I'm just trying different solutions. My defense forces don't seem to need maneuverability as much, or at least I haven't needed it yet. Maybe the HH is better in most to all cases, but I do like the pack of Gauss Guns pointed forward. Pops VN's like... popcorn.
