So destroyers get names like

Negotiations
Warnings
Pressure
Sternly Worded Rebuke
Possible Sanctions

Cruisers get somewhat stronger names like

Sanctions
Arms Inspection
Consequences

Dreadnoughts pull out the big guns then:

Serious Consequences
Dire Repercussions
Drastic Measures
oooh, those are some nice ones, i might use one or two of those for my more one off ships

Dire Repercussions is hilarious as a ship name. Sort of like when Louis XIV used to inscribe his cannons with Ultima Ratio Regnum.

I usually don't bother naming ships against the AI. Against humans, only if I remember.

With one exception: Morrigi flagship is almost always "Wrath of Qu'aan" :D

Now I keep picturing the SFS "She's one of ours sir!"

Liirian "Chicken 'o the Sea"
Hiver vessel "Raaaaaaid!!!"
Morrigi COL "Poly want a Cracker"
Tarkan colonizer "Eggs over easy"
And finally SolForce's mightiest vessel the SFS Titanic!
N* makes me miss my Commadore 64 and my copies of Starflight I + II :(

SG2: A what?

Regrouping after the loss of the Leviathan, Solforce quickly commissioned a new LV Class vessel the 'SFS Please Dont Blow This Thing Up It's Really Expensive You Alien Bastards'

Historians should note that the LV Class was the only hull size long enough to print the name of the ship on the bow.

I tend to designate my ships DD, CC and DN/BB. DD obviously refers to destroyers so I have names like DDG (Standard Command or Hammerhead/Armour [with missile]/Engine Section or DD-EW (Electronic Warfare). Ships with beam or plasma/fusion cannon weapons get an A - for advanced - or H - for Heavy.

Cruisers, pretty much the same except their refueler I call an Auxiliary (AUX) because it also has an auxiliary role (which for my ships is unescorted deep range refuelling - the most dangerous job in the fleet).

My dreadnoughts I label either DN or BB, difference is that my dreadnoughts are focused on heavy weapons and used for planetary bombardment or attacking stations while BBs (Battleships) are more ship-to-ship combat vessels with faster firing weapons with wider firing arcs.

Am REALLY looking forward to naming my ships in SotS 2 though - that is going to be awesome!

I play as Lirr (they are the best) and i use a code system that automatically puts the ships i want in combat, Id notice a unorgenized fleet puts ships in Alphabetical order, So i use a code to increase my chances of a combat ready fleet if my attention was diverted that turn,

for example

I have Main line

DDD Dyshion Destoryer - Armor Destoyer
KKD Dyshion Battleship - Usally Shielded Armor
MMD Dyshion's Pride - Barrage Dread

My scouts, Cnc's and support ships also have codeing.

DDS Distance Fighter - ER
DSS CnC -Squad CnC
XXZ Transport - Colonizer Destoryer size
ZZY RS Cruiser - Repair and salvage.

Tankers, RS, trade ships, use X for destoyer and Z for cruiser

lol

Sometimes i require "role" ships like bombers and AM (Anti-Missile) but i use the basic code here too lol.

The first letter is Class (D-Destoryer, K-Cruiser, M-Dread)
The second is support, Cnc's, scouts and EW, If not a D-K-M its an S for example a wild weasle is DSW Pester
The third changes for game to game depending on the early i get the tech to make the design. unless its mainline,

I think is a good idea, Im easly destracted by another fleet in a turn and forget to manage a fleet, most of the time i miss sorting the fleet out i still end up with good attacking ships lol

I play a lot as Liir, and yes I do name my ships.
The ships name i use are determined by their functions and their powers.
For example I use the name Left Hummer for my Squadron CnC, as how her task is to hum orders to other ships, even though she is already dead-that's why I add "Left".
The name changes as the ship level rises, I name my Strikeforce CnC as Sunken Chanter, and Armada CnC as Buried Choir.
The names still need revisions though-sometimes they just don't fit.
why, then, do you bring war to the liir?

I might be boring, but I name them by its mission (and sometimes it function) and a number. For instance “Armor 101”. The number is divided in two. The hundred is the class (100 for DE, 200 for CR, 300 for DN, 400 for stations, and 000 for drones). The next two numbers are the mark number. The first one I build is always 01. When I make a new design I upgrade it to 02 and so on. For huge upgrades, like for instance going from fission to fusion engines I often skip some numbers to get to a nice even number (for instance going from 07 directly to 10).
A lot of these road signs go missing every year as the tourists collect their trophies. It makes me wonder if this road sign is indeed the most wanted souvenir of Norway...

I'm like Ivra, I use strictly functional names to help me keep track of what ships are for. Something like "Armor" for destroyers with the "Armor" mission section, "Heavy Armor" for cruisers with the same role, and "Super Heavy Armor" for the dreadnought. Then a "block" number (Block Ia, Block IIc, Block IIId, etc.) that identifies the drive era (that's the number--1 for fission, 2 for fusion, 3 for anti-matter) and a letter for each revision. So, for instance, I might name a ship "Assimilation Delivery Block III" if it was a cloaked bio-warfare ship designed to deliver the assimilation plague, or Super Heavy Carrier Block IIIb for a DN drone carrier that had undergone two revisions (replacing some weapons with others), using anti-matter engines. If I was in multiplayer I might obfuscate it a bit to make it harder for people to figure out what I'm doing, but for single player it doesn't really matter.

I name all my ships George, because I can't say Sylvester, George.

Don't think I haven't been thinking about that very thing. I'm going to have to compile a referral list so I'm not sitting around for twenty or thirty minutes per ship built trying to think of a name.

Hopefully, someone will be kind and generous and provide an excellent default list of names for each ship class so that bears of very little brain will not hurt themselves whilst partaking of your game. Oh bother.
