TV Tropes Page for Sword of the Stars

Post by Erinys » Thu May 14, 2009 9:52 pm

Found this recently and was delighted to see how hard someone has worked on the SotS page! Well done, Dog Soldiers! I wish our entries on Wikipedia had this much detail. :)

...interesting...

Heya

Aye, 'tis a wonderful conglomeration of details...

By the history of the page, it was created on the 13 of April this year, and has been extensively updated since, with the latest alterations being last week.

Sadly a lot of the work has been done by someone who did not log into the site while working, so the history displays only their IP Address...

However, the following usernames were sighted:
Uknown Troper ( several edits of content )
Cidolfas ( altered category of the article )

Well, that is awesome. But you know, it's hardly surprising.

I still play Sword of the Stars, on occasion and can easily sink several hours into the game. It's good enough, as space empires go, to grab your attention and really suck you in - kind of a Rome: Total War of space games. There's a lot to like, between the highly original art, the cinematic graphics, the genius gimmick the various FTL drives for each race provide in terms of replay value and strategic choices.

So I don't want to sell any of that stuff short when I say this, but I think really hands-down the best part about this game for me is the writing. Erinys, you seriously did a kick ass job designing these races, and your capacity to answer any conceivable question posed by interested fans adds considerable value to the game itself. I don't know if you're just making it up as you go along or what, but damn. You've answered questions regarding everything from alien cuisine to sexual habits, the role of individuals and groups in society, offered insights to cross-cultural relations between interstellar empires - it is a rich, vibrant reality you're writing here and I think you're crazy not to make it a roleplaying game or something. I'm sure this company has more planned for this setting, and to be honest I think they seriously lucked out when they got you as their fiction gal.

Your writing is so thorough and appealing, especially in tandem with the game's beautiful art, that it is hard to avoid the temptation to actually use the material for other things. For example I recently concluded an RPG with some friends based on Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers (the "space marine" genre is near and dear to my heart) and I needed some cool aliens for my MIs to come up against. I ended up sketching in a fictional history complete with briefings and intelligence dossiers composed partly from PDFs from the AMoCs Appendices. My players went up against the Tarka, the Liir, the dreaded Zuul, and rescued a Morrigi space station all in addition to fighting the Arachnid threat. The game was a blast, and the highly detailed races combined with the sketches made the game come alive at the table. We even took on a Tarka survivor from a destroyed colony, Ish'Thak'Ren, and he ended up being a very important character.

I'm actually not that big on "borrowing" stuff from other games, but like I said I felt that the SotS world was really high quality. I'm sure this is starting to become uncomfortably lengthy, so let me just conclude by saying thanks for putting your heart into your work and making it rock. Your efforts have not only improved Sword of the Stars but have clearly caught my imagination and that of many others, if the forum threads on the races (STILL going strong) are any indication, and all this three years post-release. That's a job well done.

Many thanks for the kind words, Maestro, and I am glad that the work I've done on Sword of the Stars has given you so much pleasure; it's certainly gratifying to hear that the alien races I've created are so versatile in other game settings. :)

The Sword of the Stars universe is probably the finest work I have done to date as a writer, but it has also been the hardest. Posts like yours make me realize that the time and effort I have put into this project was well worth it; if these creations can transcend the boundaries I set for them and bring life to other worlds, I've accomplished far more than I originally hoped. :)

Hmm. Now I have a temptation to stamp out some pen & paper RPG rules for a SotS game setting.

It's not like I or anyone else would have time to play, though.

Hm, well the Hero System is supposed to be able to simulate anything, and this looks like pretty good Star Hero material to me. I know of a good play-by-post site to test it out at as well called Hero Central, if people are interested. I don't think I could afford the time to GM, but if someone were interested in doing so I would consider giving it a go; I'm in a few other games there and know the ropes.

Fractious Allies -- Hiver vs. Hiver, with allies
Who Let The Bugs Out -- Hiver vs. Tarka and Zuul
Tarka Ascendant -- Tarka vs. Hiver and Zuul

Erinys, is there any more word on new copies of the Deacon's Tale? I really, really want to read that book! This should say something, because as a doc with little free time, I dont read for fun anymore but for ADT I would be thrilled to get a little less sleep....

I'm working on a revised edition of the book with footnotes and a few extras. It's taking a it more time than I hoped because I am having to work on it while other projects are underway, but when I've finished the new edition and the rest of the team has added a few details, we will make a print-on-demand edition available for the few people who would like to have a copy.

Thanks for the reminder that there are still fans who would like the hard copy! :)

It would be even better if, eventually, it became a TV series.

I look forward to the hard copy since tragically, it did not come with the Ultimate Edition on Steam.

POD has given a lot of out-of-print RPGs new life. Even if it weren't for what's going to be in the book, I'd give it my support because of this. :)
