Proliferate Liir... Wait...

Post by GammaPaladin » Sat Jun 05, 2010 3:32 pm

So I was describing the incorporate/accommodate/proliferate techs to someone who wasn't clear on their actual function and a nagging question occurred to me: How does Proliferate Liir even work for someone playing the Human faction, considering the lore regarding Liir and node travel?

I mean, it's obviously meant to be an abstraction for spreading colonists among your worlds via trade lanes and colony ships... But how are they moving from the world I conquered and cultivated their population on to the rest of my worlds when they can't be transported on any ship my faction is capable of producing (Other than STL ships I suppose)?

Are they building their own little stutter warp transport ships? Are they being put into suspended animation so they sleep through the trip (I can already hear the colonists joking about the new shipment of frozen fish...)?

Just curious ;)

It's more about setting things up on your worlds so that those Liir (or whatever) who might be interested in trying to make a living on your worlds can find opportunities, immigrate and thrive there. They can manage their own transportation. :)

But... how?

Especially considering I'm rarely at peace with anyone and for the most part the proliferation is going on within my own empire... Generally they're coming from a world I conquered and kept the existing Liir population on. If they're managing their own transportation that means my empire is allowing them to build their own interstellar transports. So are they STL ships or do they retain the capacity to build ships with their own racial drive tech? If the latter why can't I have them build me warships?

I rather suspect the "frozen fish shipment" method is more likely...

You can imagine what you like, then. ;)

Conscious, unprepared Liir react poorly to Nodespace. Liir who have been reduced to a coma state are nicely pacified for transport. Also, never assume that legitimate Nodelanes are the only means of transport to your planets. ;)

Now, why do I have a sudden image of the first marriage/first homosexual marriage scene from Mel Brooks's History of the World regarding human-liir interaction and migration?

What other ways are there and can we use them in SOTS2?

They can always slowboat all the way as well...

Although I can imagine the human captain's surprise when they hear it: "Wait, you want me to take you all the way to Epsilon Eridanus without using the node lines?! That will take 55 turns!" (how much time is a turn by the way?)

They're being used all the time. Civilian transports, unremarkable supply vessels etc etc.
As in every game SOTS1 gives you relevant info and skips/automates the rest.

If I understand it correctly the various factions are just the parts of the local sector population that have been incorporated into a militarized and organized state.
You can't trust the Liir. Never trust someone that smiles all the time.

Better said as 'one unit of plot which is approximately a year.' ;)

One segment of plot in general. calling it a year is convenient at times. For my current SOTS writing project, time is measured in cycles involving two moons and a planets rotation around the local star. The only refrence used is 'About 10 months'. Thus allowing things to advance at the only sensable speed, that of plot.
The brain gets its power from performing many parallel operations, a computer from performing operations very quickly.

In the novel, it was weeks or months.

A turn is a undefined unit of time :P

erm, thanks for all the answers!

I guess it can be blamed on the whole traveling faster than light thing that messes time and space up.
