Voice acting?

Post by The Magus » Fri Feb 29, 2008 8:29 pm

For some reason, until just recently, it seemed perfectly matter-of-fact that this was a game filled with text. I don't know if I've just been indoctrinated that this genre is a text-dialogue adventure or not. But just recently it occured to me "Wait...it could also have voice acted dialogue!".

So just curious, do we have any idea if Northstar will be a VA heavy game, a VA accented game, or a classic text reader?
The teacher cut in smoothly, "Yes, of course. SolForce never fails to remind us how necessary they are to our...'survival'. ... It amazes me that the human race ever managed to exist, before you lot came along."

Cai Rui smiled thinly. "What amazes me is how quickly the human race could cease to exist, if we were gone."

British Actors as well... So I would make that very good...

I would point out Privateer 2 as a non-textual example in this Genre... ;)

While there were hiccups, and several choices I would have chosen a third or fourth option for, what was in there was really quite good... :)

true and that is a very good example of how you can have voice of for a lot of stuff...as long as that stuff is fairly constrained

Hmm, I just hope Kerberos doesn't let itself be constrained by voice acting.
To be honest, I've never been so hot about it myself. It's one of those things that can seriously degrade a game, but (in my experience) doesn't really add all that much even if done well :|

Oh well, maybe N-star will be the game to change my mind?

I agree it can degrade an experience (although there's usually an option to turn it off or down so you can't hear it) but on the other hand I think when done really well it helps quite a lot.

Edit: I think fallout and fallout 2 had good voice and cutscenes - not that many, but when they were used, they were good.

Surprisingly, Baldur's Gate was also good, which I did not expect at the time.

Voice acting can be bad, look at Oblivion for example. (ZOMG! Teh Patricks! Teh Beans! ZOD! Teh... oh wait my wife and my neighbors have to do the rest of the voices now...)

As long as there's not the same six voices and/or repeated odd phrases like in Freelancer "We don't own this place, but we have an... understanding..." it'll be good :)

to be honest the larger/more high profile aproject is the more likely you are going to be to have conservative use of VA as the scheduling is extremely tight with recording usually done only once in a large session. Whereas a lot of rpg style games are addingh missions/changing content right up to beta point and no big company reschedules pick up session for VA at that point if there is any other choice in the matter. This is one of the circumstances where smaller is better as we tend to be able to be a lil more reflexive with VA sessions.

Especially if you have a good deal of your talent the next cubicle over(read: in house).

Right, Mec?

Some of us "in house" folks are not in the house! I have done a bit of voice-acting for Kerberos, for example, but at present I'm across the continent.

Fortunately, Vancouver is a city with a lot of wonderful performers. :D

Won't the gazillion accents of pretty much all of humanity (or, well, someone from pretty much everywhere) In Space be kind of hard to do?
