STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI *spoilers* 'cause I can't keep secrets!

Post by marshb » Mon Dec 18, 2017 8:15 pm

I don't know about anyone else, but I very much enjoyed this movie. I liked the new characters that were added (Yay for Rose!) and Luara Derns, Benicio Del Toro (we know that sneaky sob will be back!). I liked how all the plot lines didn't end in "satisfing" endings (like, that has to be a thing!? I'm looking at the Rose-Finn quest that ultimately went bust. At least they got out alive!) I get the feeling, Phasma is like a cockroach and cant be killed, at least not easily.

I especially liked the Skywalker ending. I mean, whats wrong with giving beloved childhood characters a victory lap! (A lot of haters apparently didn't get the word that adulthood is a thing and people mature and move on. Even fictional ones).
And what an ending! The greatest Jedi mind trick ever! (In more ways than one).

I liked how they didn't forget that Liea is a force user and included it in the movie!

Oh yeah, Porgs!

I get that a lot was unsaid, story lines left blank or only hinted at, but then this is a serial! And we get an entire trilogy to fill it all in, but like Empire, it will be seen as a great part of the SW universe even if it isn't now.

My two cents. :D

SPOILER ALERT.

The heroic sacrifice of Vice Admiral Holdo was also spectacular. It was also something of a plot hole, but I'm willing to suspend disbelief a bit, or explain it as a hyperspace micro-jump directly into Snoke's ship, made possible by the First Order's attention being on the fleeing transports.

She actually went to lightspeed, not hyperspace... so, slightly different... she stayed in this reality, not jumped into the 5th dimension or however the heck hyperspace works. Something going critically close to light speed would definitely do that to space ships...

I really enjoyed it, I think especially because it was different. I didn't feel like I had seen this exact story before and even elements that seemed familiar didn't always turn out like I thought they would. The battle scenes were pretty neat, though the highlight for me was the lightsaber combat in the middle, which I thought was fun to watch and not difficult to follow. I plan on seeing it in the theater again. :)

Lol this! Especially in how the scene played out in total silence! :awesome:

Wish I could say I liked this, but I walked away wishing I had watched... pretty much anything else.

The effects were good, the action was certainly exciting, but the story and characters didn't do it for me. Which is a shame, because I loved the characters, new and old in previous movies, but the way this movie handled pretty much all of them just left a bad taste in my mouth. And the interactions between Rey and Kylo Ren (for that matter, how Kylo Ren more or less hijacked Rey's story) made me so uncomfortable I wanted to leave the theater.

How exactly did he hijack her story? She crippled his really. He couldn't even coup without her?

nerdist wrote:If you thought The Last Jedi was “too different” from the original Star Wars trilogy, then think again. While the common online criticism of The Last Jedi leading us too far afield from the Star Wars stories we know and love may be true from a certain point of view, it’s also factually inaccurate. The Star Wars prequel trilogy was made to rhyme with events and echo themes of the original trilogy, and now that Disney’s sequel trilogy is two films deep, we can see that it honors the legacy of the original films the same way that the prequels did. (And all without the aid of a certain bumbling Gungan senator.

The similarities between The Last Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back are myriad. While the two films are separated by the span of nearly 40 years, the imagery and plot devices employed by both are too numerous to discount as mere coincidence. Allow us to explain:

In both The Last Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back, we follow our heroes on a single ship, on the run through space from the Empire/First Order’s most powerful capital ships.

Meanwhile, Luke and Rey are off on remote planets, learning the ways of the Force from Jedi Masters who are pretty cagey about taking on new pupils at first.

Both Luke and Rey are beckoned by the dark side to seek out shadowy caverns, only to be horrified by what they find therein.

After brief periods of training, they both leave to rejoin the larger fight after experiencing Force-induced visions.

Our subplots take us to faraway, exotic locales—Cloud City on Bespin and the casinos of Canto Bight—full of smooth-talking shysters—Lando Calrissian and the Master Codebreaker (and even D.J. to a certain extent)—where our heroes only manage to escape because their droids save their butts.

Luke and Rey confront Darth Vader and Kylo Ren, respectively. We even get a callback to Return of the Jedi in the turbolift to Snoke’s throne room when Rey implores Kylo Ren to turn back to the light, just as Luke did to his father decades earlier.

Then there’s the big lightsaber fight. After all is said and done, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren offer Luke and Rey the chance to rule the galaxy by their sides. They also reveal huge secrets about both characters’ parentage. While Rey doesn’t get dismembered, both scenes pretty much end up the same way as both Luke and Rey refuse to join and rule the galaxy. By the end of the film, our heroes are batter, changed, and barely holding on, but they’re ready to keep fighting and hopeful for the future.

Are the plot points exactly the same? Of course they aren’t. The Last Jedi gives us fresh twists and turns, sending the franchise heading off in an entirely new direction, but the same Midi-chlorians that make up Star Wars‘ DNA are still present in The Last Jedi.
Extra bonus with the ending... it feels like it ends almost where Empire strikes back begins. A lot of similarities between Hoth and Crait there...

One more thing, after thinking about it... the whole falcon flying through Crait vs. the Asteroid belt... look familiar, much?

I personally LOVED the movie. It took some chances in places that I feel really make room for more development later (Snoke). Overall I really appreciated what seemed like real effort to explain WHAT the Force is and the philosophical discussion that stems from that. As an aside; I really dont understand all the hate the Finn/Rose story line gets. Personally I feel that Rose is one of the more important characters in the film. She IS the rebellion personified. Driven by love and loss and a need to lash out at injustice. A really beautiful character. The scene with her sister sacrificing herself in the first 10 minutes made me FEEL what they were fighting for and then later to have Rose giving some backstory just drove the whole point home. When I hear people say that her character was "useless" I really question if we watched the same film.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

I thought it was lovely. Really enjoyed it, on several levels.

To me it falls down with repeated viewings. The plot holes is strong in this one.I think in time this is be rated like the prequals.Abrams got the starwars mythos which is a popcorn fantasy space opera.

I did enjoy the first viewing but I recall liking the Phantom menace the first time too.Come on admit it,heh.

Disney will run Starwars onto the ground.I give it 5 years before nobody gives a shit about it,again.Every character is going to be wrecked. The Han spin off is next.

yeah, no...if you are going to do the sophisticated star wars expert thing with this movie then you are missing the point badly. But to each their own. I do not care for disney take over all of film but that is a different topic.

(And for the record no, the phantom menace was shit for a lot of us from beginning to end. Nothing to admit there)

Annnnnd finally saw it. It wasn't bad. Some parts dealing with the Force I didn't exactly appreciate. And I'm not sure I'm onboard with the whole "the Jedi have to die" followed by "I won't be the last Jedi". It's a bit contradictory.

I think I prefer the Dark Forces take on the Force and balance. And I wish that we had seen progress in that direction. Alas that's all been discarded so.

Anyway, it wasn't a train wreck or disaster like the haters are making it out to be, but it wasn't exactly as interesting as I personally would have liked.
If you want a different perspective, stand on your head.

that was pretty hedge betty...

you do realize the philosophy The Force draws upon states that the whole Dark Side/Light Side dichotomy is a human mistake...right?
