Re: Shield Technology
because of the new damage system, if shields work the same way as they do in sots 1, they could end up being the go-to choice for every battle due to their ability to prevent damage to systems. of course, there were weapons that penetrated shields, but just cause something has a counter doesn't make the original strategy a non issue
on the other hand, could shields be changed to do something like absorb a certain amount of damage, or have a % chance to reflect a projectile?

Re: Shield Technology
Since we have a shiny new Energy tech coming up, any chance we'll be able to create Planetary Shields to protect our core worlds?

With total coverage? Not likely. Shields for highly populated areas? Maybe.
Re: Shield Technology
I was thinking of satellite-type shield generators that float around the world and project a shield..... actually, it doesn't have to cover the planet, it could actually be a Deflector shield mounted on a sat that faces out into space! That would work better.

Re: Shield Technology
I'm still wondering how conventional Shields in SotS1 will scale up in SotS2. Will we see module/section specific shields or will we still get a chance to see a fully shielded DN?
Also, if we get an armor diagram now for ships: Will we be able to see shield strength indicators?

Re: Shield Technology
yes to shield indicators no to DN shields..cause.. like...the inverse cube law hasn't changed last time I checked

Are you sure? When was the last time you checked?

Re: Shield Technology
this morning...I tried to open my car door with my rare earth magnets from my back porch...didn't work.

Re: Shield Technology
do you mean there are no DN shields because of a realism > gameplay issue? or is there another reason you don't want them?
Re: Shield Technology
I have a very precise and personal sense of things I find so dumb it makes my brain hurt...one of those is bad SF that makes volume energy effects have no relationship to size.
Re: Shield Technology
i suppose i can understand that.
Re: Shield Technology
What about a damper field off an Lv, kinda like earths magnetic field, a fleet support thing.

Re: Shield Technology
If the Liir can use their stutter drive technology to project one shield around multiple smaller vessels at once, couldn't they somehow do one CR shield rapidly stuttering around to different positions around a DN?
Re: Shield Technology
I don't know.... sounds too simple. I know they can't cover a DN completely because cruisers are 3 times smaller and thus their drives can't produce an adequate 'envelope' to cover them; but what you're suggesting sounds very similar to a Shield Projector. I doubt it would be a practical tech though; the Liir would probably just simply make a DN sized equivalent to cover their big ships as well. Good point, though, because DN's currently have no energy shields aside from point deflector shields and maybe shield projectors in turrets (of which they have plenty, admittedly).
